Mary Martin sings "Mountain High, Valley Low" from Lute Song (1946) also Starring Yul Brynner as Tsai-Yong. Many do not realize Yul performed on Broadway before the King and I. As a matter of fact Mary Martin is significant to this in that She recommended Yul to her friends Rodgers and Hammerstein for the role of the Siamese monarch in the classic The King and I and persuaded Yul to go to the audition. Mary said of Yul, "He was grace itself, pure poetry. Yul Brynner moved more beautifully than anyone I've ever seen on stage". Yul was much tougher on his 26 year old self, " “I had no skills as an actor — none at all. I hid behind a very stylized performance that many people wrongly remember as quite remarkable, although it was not. Every performance of that show was painful for me and I hated my acting. I despised myself for playing such a weak character, and there I was stuck in a role I was ashamed of." A person can be header on themselves more than anyone else. Lute Song’s original cast album is a curiosity, limited as it is to just six songs (four of which feature Martin on the A side), and a B side consisting solely of orchestral music, forcing Yul Brynner off the disc entirely. Will we ever hear Yul! So sad! A rare find indeed. The Broadway production opened at the Plymouth Theatre on February 6, 1946 with Mary who felt miscast. A London production opened at the Winter Garden on October 11, 1948, this time with Dolly Haas opposite I had to end with that pic of Mary and Yul years later at some awards show in the 70s. They looked like they were having a ball.

According to Steve, he was in his element during the filming of The Magnificent Seven while Yul wasn’t. However, there was more to the story than just one actor being better suited for the film than the other. Steve’s character initially only had a handful of lines in the film, but the actor ended up taking over the production of the film and forcing the director to give him more to do. This still wasn’t enough for Steve, who then went about abusing his control to make the shoot a living hell for the other actors on set, including Yul Brynner. Eventually, things got so bad between Yul and Steve on the set of The Magnificent Seven that there was a physical altercation. Join Facts Verse as we explore why Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen couldn’t stand each other. Why Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen Couldn’t Stand Each Other
The Cossacks of Eastern Europe join the Poles to rid the Turks from the Steps of Europe. In return for their aid, the Poles agree to give control of the Steps to the Cossacks. After the battle, however, the Poles back out of their agreement and force the Cossacks into the hills. Taras Bulba (Yul Brynner), a Cossack Colonel, raises his son, Andrei Bulba (Tony Curtis) to learn the ways of the Poles so he can one day defeat them in battle. In his learning process, however, Andrei falls in love with Natalia Dubrov (Christine Kaufmann), the daughter of a Polish Nobleman. This twist causes Andrei Bulba to choose between the love of the Cossacks, and the love of a woman, and causes Taras Bulba to choose between the love of his son, and the love of the Cossacks. Taras Bulba did have was an absolutely brilliant score by the great Franz Waxman. From the rousing main title, to the astonishing almost twelve-minute finale with the magnificent "The battle of Dubno", Waxman’s Taras Bulba is filled with one glorious cue after another, and features one of his most beautiful and incandescent melodies in “The Wishing Star” – every time that theme makes an appearance in the score is utterly magical. The great Bernard Herrmann called Taras Bulba “The score of a lifetime.” And indeed it is – one of the greatest action/adventure scores ever written by one of the greatest film composers who ever lived.

Prior to his death, with the help of the American Cancer Society, Brynner created a public service announcement using a clip from the Good Morning America interview. A few days after his death, it premiered on all major US television networks and in other countries. Brynner used the announcement to express his desire to make an anti-smoking commercial after discovering he had cancer, and his death was imminent. He then looked directly into the camera for 30 seconds and said, "Now that I'm gone, I tell you: Don't smoke. Whatever you do, just don't smoke. If I could take back that smoking, we wouldn't be talking about any cancer. I'm convinced of that." His year of birth, in one version of the commercial, was incorrectly given as 1915.

Before Yul Brynner came around the old saying 'bald is beautiful' never even existed. It's said that even Michael Jordan might have borrowed his signature 'chrome dome' look from Brynner. But even if that's true, Yul was the first brave traveler to trek on down the lonely road of the follicularly challenged. And he did so with his chest out and his shoulders held high. Nope, he could actually grow a full head of hair if he wanted to but after he first shaved his hair for his iconic role in The King and I and ended up liking the way he looked so much that he decided the keep it going. What was only ever intended to be a temporary grooming choice for a film role became an aesthetic that he would rock for the rest of his life.
