This weekend we visited Yaroslavl, an interesting city in Russia which is full of history and beauty. One of the highlights of the trip was actually on the way back to Moscow when we took the sleeper train/ trans Siberian railway as it's a mode of transport I've wanted to experience for a long time! Overall, it was a fun trip. We had some delicious Georgian food (Mamuka), visited many churches and the Kremlin, looked over the Volga river (longest river in Europe), walked through the park, had some drinks at a few bars, ate a traditional lunch with Russian family and paid our respect at the ice hockey stadium. Join me for a trip down memory lane to Yaroslavl, where I studied Russian in the spring and summer of 1994. Capital of the Golden ring, and UNESCO-listed, it’s a mere 3 hours away from Moscow by train (or a 40 minute flight; which we chose to get here). Locals will tell you to visit in the summer but it’s great in winter too, for a weekend away.
The city of Yaroslavl is situated on the Volga River, about 250 km northeast of Moscow. It was founded by the Prince of Kievan Russia Yaroslav-the-Wise (988-1010) and consisted of a small wooden fortress. The Historical Centre of the City of Yaroslavl is the oldest part and the kernel of development of one of the most ancient, rich, and well preserved Russian cities. A specific and unique feature of Yaroslavl is the existence of numerous 16th- and 17th-century churches and monastic ensembles with valuable mural paintings and iconostases, which are outstanding in terms of their architecture, as dominant town-planning elements and composition centres.The main merits of the town-planning structure and architectural face of Yaroslavl city centre are the rational approach to activation of artistic values of the past within the city system, and the subordination of further architectural constructions to them, using the contrast between picturesque ancient churches and distinctly regular, symmetrical, composed classical buildings of the later periods. Another particularity is the organic use of the rich natural landscape at the junction of two rivers, with their picturesque banks and wide water expanses. In July 2005 Yaroslavl's historic city center was inscribed onto the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl Rivers around 300 km north-east of Moscow, the historic city of Yaroslavl developed into a major commercial centre from the 11th century. There are two major passenger railway stations in Yaroslavl. They can be easily mixed up. The one you are probably looking for is called ‘Yaroslavl-Glavny’. The city is connected to Moscow by a fast electric train service with comfortable seats. Just 3 hours from the capital of Russia and you are in the very centre of Yaroslavl. Yaroslavl is one of the Golden Ring cities, a group of historic cities northeast of Moscow that have played an important role in Russian history. The historic part of the city is a World Heritage Site. One of the central squares of Yaroslavl is called Sovetskaya. Ironically, the most beautiful and notable orthodox church in the town is located just here. This is the Church of Elijah the Prophet, which is a very prominent example of the way in which the city developed in the 17th century. The church of the Epiphany is an Orthodox church in Yaroslavl. Built in 17th century as well, it is known for beautiful fresco paintings and tiled decoration of facades. Another famous cathedral in Yaroslavl, Uspensky, was built in the 13th century and destroyed in the Soviet era, the city park was created on its place. The cathedral was rebuilt in 2010, its construction was completed to the 1000th anniversary of Yaroslavl. While walking around the city centre you will definitely find this Kremlin-alike construction. The truth is it is not the Yaroslavl Kremlin, it is the Cathedral of the Spassky (St Savior) Monastery. The Cathedral is the oldest buildings in the city. Typical for a Russian monastery of the Middle Ages, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery in Yaroslavl was not built to be no more than a place of worship, but also to be a citadel and kremlin in case, in times of war. Just near this monastery you can find a little structure, the Lady of Kazan Chapel. If you have a one thousand rubles banknote, you can find it there as well along with the monument to Yaroslav the Wise, the founder of the city. 1000 Anniversary of Yaroslavl was celebrated in Russia in 2003. Huge part of the historic centre was renovated with some new sightseeings constructed. Strelka park is one of them, it’s a huge promenade area at the bank of the Volga river with beautiful views. The Volga embankment is a good example of urban planning in the classicist style; built in the 1840s, this promenade walk has remained a favourite place for residents to take a stroll and relax ever since. On our last day in the Golden Ring Russia, Katie and I explored Yaroslavl! This was likely our favourite Golden Ring city, as it has SO much to offer and see and do. Places like Suzdal or Plyos offered a quaint quiet city, but Yaroslavl is much more vibrant overall with a ton of deep history! This is part of the Best of the Golden Ring as a Yaroslavl day trip from Moscow (Москва в Ярославль). On a quick day trip, we started in the afternoon after arriving from Kostroma. This would be the same as if you did a day trip from Moscow, arriving by train that afternoon. Ideally, you'd spend the night to get some of the great nightlife ambiance with glowing city lights at night. However, it could even be done with a late train ride back home that evening. We would have liked two days in Yaroslavl to enjoy the sights a bit more, but we were on a schedule and not able to stay one more day, unfortunately. Some sights we saw were: Cathedral of Assumption, Transfiguration Monastery, Church of Olya the Prophet, and many other areas of the UNESCO protected old town. Mologa was a town in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia, formerly situated at the confluence of the rivers Mologa and Volga, but now submerged under the waters of the Rybinsk Reservoir. Mologa existed at least since the 12th century. It was a part of the Principality of Rostov in the early 13th century. Later on, the town was annexed by the Principality of Yaroslavl. In 1321, it became the center of an independent principality. Soon after that, Ivan III annexed Mologa in favor of the Muscovy. Thereupon Mologa's rulers moved to Moscow, where they have been known as Princes Prozorovsky and Shakhovskoy. In the late 15th century, they relocated a fair from Kholopiy Gorodok (a town 55 km north of Mologa) to Mologa. After that, Mologa turned into one of the most important Russian trade centers with the Asian countries. According to an account by Sigismund von Herberstein, there was a fortress in Mologa. Sennaya Square during the annual fire brigade celebration in Mologa. A fire lookout tower (on the right) was designed by Andrey Dostoyevsky. Following the Time of Troubles, Mologa thrived as a trade sloboda. In the 19th - early 20th centuries, it was a big staging post on the Volga because the town had been located at the beginning of the Tikhvinskaya water system, connecting the Volga with the Baltic Sea. The flooding of Mologa was ordered in 1935 and following this order, during the construction of the Rybinsk Reservoir and Rybinsk hydroelectric plant, the town was subsequently evacuated and engulfed by water in the 1940s. Previously, Mologa could remain to be an existing city, but a necessity for an increased capacity of Rybinsk hydroelectric plant levered the level of Rybinsk Reservoir being constructed from 98 to 102m above the sea level making Mologa, standing 98m above the sea level, cease its existence. Around 130,000 people were forced to move from Mologa and the surrounding areas and settle in the nearest Slip, Yaroslavl and nearest settlements and regions, as well as Moscow and Leningrad. 294 locals refused to leave their homes and eventually drowned. A monument was erected in 2003 to commemorate those who refused the evacuation order. In 1992-1993 the level of the Rybinsk Reservoir decreased at 1.5m which permitted historians to organize the first expedition to a visible part of the former city. This resulted in collecting information for the future Mologa Museum and making a film. April 14 is remembered in Yaroslavl Oblast as the Day of Mologa. On this day, the boats with monks and priests sail to the spot where Mologa used to stand, and hold divine service in front of the upper parts of cross-crowned belfries which are still visible above the water of the artificial lake. Every second Saturday of August ordinary people visit Mologa's site on board of a ship. In August, 2014 the water-level became extremely low, which let the former inhabitants of Mologa see their previous homes and wish to visit them on board of a ship.
