Filmed and edited by: Zisimos Zizos Licensed Drone Operator Info about the video: No matter what time of year you visit upscale Vouliagmeni, chances are you’ll feel like you’re on a summer holiday. Sitting pretty on the south-western foot of Mount Ymittos, about 40 minutes from the city, this luxe resort town has a year-round tropical vibe and is to Athens what Cannes is to the Cote d'Azur. There’s next to no graffiti. Palm trees, fountains and sunny beds of marigolds line Athinas Avenue, heralding your arrival at this most self-aware of southern suburbs whose main game is leisure. Kostis Georgiou’s bright zoomorphic sculpture Equus accentuates the near constant blue of the sky and the sweep of Vouliagmeni Bay, with its luxury yachts and members-only nautical clubs and marinas. Fashionable types from Kolonaki and Kifissia once turned up their noses at this “remote backwater where one only went to dip one’s toes in the water”. Vouliagmeni still falls rather short on culture and shopping, but it does flaunt Athens’ comeliest free and paid beaches and finest seaside dining. Along Fleming Street (the area’s Millionaire’s Row) and in verdant Kavouri you’ll find some of the capital’s priciest real estate. On summer weekends, when this coastal enclave swells with tourists and townies seeking a city reprieve, locals have learned to avoid their own beaches and artisan ice cream parlours. Vouliagmeni Lake Almost hidden from view behind Posidonos Avenue is the beautiful sunken cavern of Vouliagmeni Lake, which lends this southern suburb its name (vouliagmeni means “sunken” in Greek). Open year-round, the lake is actually a flooded limestone cave, lined with tawny cliffs and fed by underground mineral currents that stay a constant 24° C. Many gripe about the hefty entrance fee (currently €12 on weekdays, €15 on weekends). But wading through the brackish grottos, with tiny black fish (kalogries) nudging your toes, conjures the feel of an exclusive spa. The lake is flanked by luxuriant lawns and sunbeds and there’s an all-day restaurant that hosts gastronomic evenings (spring to autumn), accompanied by live jazz and orchestral performances, under the illuminated rocks. Swimming in Vouliagmeni Elegant Vouliagmeni is more democratic than first impressions suggest: you’ll find all bases of beach covered here. High rollers head to famous Astir on the lush pine-clad peninsula of Mikro Kavouri. Once the summer playground of Jackie Onassis and Bridget Bardot, Athens’ most expensive beach offers manicured sands, waiter service to your lounger, designer boutiques and fine dining. Central Akti Vouliagmeni, where Posidonos and Apollonos converge, is one of the city’s best-groomed municipal beaches and a multi-tasking oasis that caters to all. For €5 entry, you have access to sunloungers, wide grassy strips for picnics and ballgames, tennis and volleyball courts, cafes and a playground, plus an aqua inflatable park. Locals like to swim for free from the rocky piers outside of En Plo café or Sardelaki. Both provide access to the clear waters of the Vouliagmeni basin. Also free, Limanakia Vouliagmeni is the most popular of a run of rocky coves off the coastal road, just outside of Vouliagmeni. Bronzed locals chill out to music on a sociable deck before leaping into the deep blue sea. Vouliagmeni is almost certainly the most beautiful suburb of Athens, Greece. Located at the southwestern base of Ymittos Mountain and is only 20km away south of the center of Athens. It extends around the bay of Vouliagmeni and the whole area is full of pine and palm trees. The eastern part is rocky and where its center is located nearby the lake of Vouliagmeni. The western part of the area consists of two peninsulas, Micro Kavouri and Megalo Kavouri, which means small and big crab in Greek due to their geological shape, with sandy beaches, luxury hotels and residences, a large marina, restaurants, tennis courts, sports facilities and the renowned Astir Palace Four Seasons Hotel. Vouliagmeni is a seaside suburb and former municipality 20 km south of Piraeus city centre. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 5.805 km2. Its population was 4,180 at the 2011 census. The suburb is named after Lake Vouliagmeni, located in its vicinity. It is one of the most prestigious Athenian suburbs, home to renowned hotels and beaches. The area has some of the highest real estate prices in the Balkans. Vouliagmeni sits on the southwestern foot of the Hymettus mountain range. It is bisected by a palm tree lined boulevard, Athinas Avenue, which arrives from Athens city centre as Vouliagmenis Avenue, then runs parallel to the seashore and continues southwards. The area east of the main road is the rocky slope of a foothill of Mount Hymettus, and the bulk of the town is built there, along with the local elementary school, post office, banks and town hall. The Vouliagmeni beaches are consistently awarded the coveted EU blue flags for environmental excellence. The triathlon competition for the 2004 Summer Olympics took place in this area. The small, rocky islet of Fleves lies off shore. Immediately to the south of town and very close to the sea, a rare geological formation is to be found that gave the suburb its modern name: Lake Vouliagmeni ("Sunken Lake"), a small brackish-water lake fed by underground currents seeping through the mass of Mount Hymettus. Because of its comfortable water temperature —ranging from 22 to 29ºCelsius — the lake functions as a year-round spa. NCS: Music Without Limitations Artist: Tobu Song - Hope

I was recently invited by Lake Vouliagmeni to visit the Prive area of Lake Vouliagmeni. #gifted The lake is naturally formed from thermal springs and some seawater. Little fish come to nibble the dead skin off of you. They do tickle! Lake Vouliagmeni is a wonderful oasis near Athens. While I love a day at the beach, this is a wonderful alternative for a more luxurious day out. Food and drinks are available, and the parking is free. Hours of operation are from 8-8, with the last ticket sold at 7:30pm. Entrance fees to the lake are €15 for general entry during the week. On weekends it is €18. For the wooden deck area, the fee is €40 per pair of chairs on weekdays and €50 on weekends. For the Prive area, the fee is €35 on weekdays and €45 on weekends. The wooden deck and Prive area includes a bottle of mineral water with the fee. Vouliagmeni Lake, in the heart of the Athenian Riviera, is the hidden treasure of Attica’s nature. Situated on an idyllic landscape, this rare geological phenomenon is waiting to be discovered. The lake’s brackish waters which are continuously replenished both by the sea and the underground thermal springs offer a natural and unique thermal spa experience. The imposing rock, thermal waters, the labyrinthine underwater tunnels and the lush vegetation create a unique geological phenomenon. The lake’s present form was created after the roof of the cave fell because of erosion caused by the high temperature of the running water running. The lake is included in Greece’s national NATURA 2000 network and as a Site of Outstanding Natural Beauty by the Ministry of Culture. Chronicle of the disappearance of the 3 American divers September 1978 is the year the “Well” received great negative publicity after the disappearance of three American officers who served at the Hellenicon base. The missing persons were: Sergeant Donald Misad, 21-year-old Mark Granford and his 20-year-old sister Joan Granford’s, who were diving recreationally in the area. Various missions were organized to find and retrieve the missing, but they did not bear fruit. On November 5, 1978 a dive is organized with the participation of 30 volunteer divers while in April 1989 the scene changes with the initiative of the Hellenic Speleological Exploration Group (SP.EL.E.O.) whose members begin a series of dives for the purpose of exploration, mapping and finding the lost divers. The cave divers who took part were Giannis Spinos, Dimitris Kompiliris, Vangelis Vroutsis, Gianna Efstathiou, Karkou Vasso Costas Zoupis, and several others. In addition to mapping the underwater cave, the result was to find the remains of the two missing, which were photographed and after a series of dives brought to the surface. A scuba tank and various other objects from the unfortunate divers were also retrieved. The first remain was located 50 meters from the entrance and the second at 70 meters. The tank was covered with shells and there was air inside it, which indicates the diver lost his life before the air was depleted, possibly from reasons other than drowning. In the interview given to us by the well-known cinematographer Alexis Papadopoulos, he speculates the divers were seduced by a precipitation at the entrance of the cave. Although there was a great inflow causing the mouth of the cave to collapse over time, due to the lack of friction to the cave’s walls, this probably lured the divers into the cave. This lured the He considers this as the most probable cause of the accident and its enhanced by the fact the tank was found to have unused air inside. The superstition that accompanies “The Well” is enhanced when on November 18, 1990, in an unofficial mission to retrieve the body of one of the Americans, the diver Panagiotis Tzortzatos dies, raising the account of the losses and gives birth to the myth of the so-called "The Devil’s Tooth". Georgatos is pulled out the same day by his team members. In an interview given to us by Costas Lazanas, president of the Hellenic Association of Navy Seals and captain of the retired OYK, he mentions that in 2006, by his own initiative and that of Thanasis Liosis and Maki Themelis, efforts were made to retrieve the corpses in the presence of representatives. The operation was a success and the US Government honored them with a plaque commemorating the retrieval of two out of the three remains. Description of the cave On 09/16/2018, the diving team of Antonis Grafas started organizing a mission to the “Well” of Vouliagmeni, with the aim of filming, photographing and exploring the underwater cave that forms at its bottom. Having as a reference point the map that had emerged from the missions of SP.EL.E.O, the team gradually joined ropes of 30-40 meters to safely cover the entire length of the cave known until then. Finally, after successive missions and after the members which participated, gained a better understanding of the requirements of this particular cave, such as the necessary air supply, energy expenditure and special equipment required for the exit, they managed to spread ropes at a distance of 145 meters from its entrance. With this distance they continued beyond the section mapped to date by the divers of SP.EL.E.O., after they met what during their mission they called “Chimneys”, i.e. two vertical sections that develop towards the surface. At about 120 meters from the entrance, there is a second narrowing where the flow inwards increases again and the cave becomes cracked. In the fault the depth is about 40 meters, while beyond this point the surrounding space changes radically. The seabed becomes sandy and the gauge now shows 44-45 meters. At this point, a very large room develops where the lenses are unable to determine its dimensions and the seabed has a slope deepening considerably. From the entrance of the cave we travel to 330 degrees, after about 90 meters the compass shows 40 degrees and the depth gradually increases, something the diver should take into account when it comes to returning as the inflow is continuous and intense. After these first meters the direction of the compass returns to 320 degrees, very quickly it changes again to 220 degrees, after a while it changes again showing now 280 degrees. The depth at this point reaches 44-45 meters, which is the last point that our team reached, as the cave continues in an unknown direction. The cave was penetrated by divers: Lefteris Koutalas 140m (large hall), Antonis Grafas 130m (rift) and Erikos Kranidiotis 70m (stairs).

Vouliagmeni (Greek: Βουλιαγμένη, meaning "sunken") is a seaside town 25 km south of Athens, Greece. Immediately to the south of town and very close to the sea, a rare geophysical formation is to be found that gave the suburb its modern name: Lake Vouliagmeni ("Sunken Lake"), a small brackish water lake fed by underground currents. Because of its constant and comfortable water temperature, the lake functions as a year-round spa.

Vouliagmeni Lake in Athens, Greece is GORGEOUS! Lake Vouliagmeni is a mineral spa that is reported to have many healing properties for such ailments as eczema and dermatological diseases, neuralgia, headaches, disfiguring arthritis, chronic gynecological diseases, lumbago, sciatica and other problems. The lake is about 50 centimeters above sea level and so it is constantly overflowing and being replenished by the hot springs beneath it. The underwater cave at the edge of the lake has never been fully explored. Among the 14 tunnels which make up the cave there is one which at 800 metres is the longest in the world!!! Also known as a mysterious place because popular urban mythology said that some American scuba divers from the US Airbase nearby, disappeared while exploring the undersea caves that fed the lake in the late sixties. Then a couple years ago their bodies were discovered, more than 35 years later!

Feel an exotic experience! Snorkeling in the riviera of Athens, Greece! Astir beach is located 25 kilometers south of Athens center, in Vouliagmeni. A luxurious suburb of the Greek capital, an ideal resort for enjoying the beauty of Greek summer. Snorkeling (British and Commonwealth English spelling: snorkelling) is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped breathing tube called a snorkel, and usually swimfins. In cooler waters, a wetsuit may also be worn. Use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe underwater attractions for extended periods with relatively little effort and to breathe while face-down at the surface. Snorkeling is a popular recreational activity, particularly at tropical resort locations. It provides the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting without the complicated equipment and training required for scuba diving. It appeals to all ages because of how little effort is involved and is the basis of the two surface disciplines of the underwater sport of finswimming. Snorkeling is also used by scuba divers when on the surface, in underwater sports such as underwater hockey and underwater rugby, and as part of water-based searches conducted by search and rescue teams. Essential equipment includes the snorkel for breathing, and a diving mask or swimming goggles for vision. Swimfins for more efficient propulsion are common. Environmental protection against cold, sunburn and marine stings and scratches is also regionally popular, and may be in the form of a wetsuit, diving skins, or rash vest. Some snorkellers rely on waterproof sunscreen lotions, but some of these are environmentally damaging. If necessary, the snorkeller may wear a weightbelt to facilitate freediving, or an inflatable snorkelling vest, a form of buoyancy aid, for safety. Underwater photography has grown in popularity since the early 2000s as waterproof cameras became affordable to recreational users. Many snorkelers now carry a waterproof camera with them while they snorkel and may record photographs or video clips and later share them on social media platforms or post them to other websites. This mass of documentation has enormous scientific potential, as millions of tourists are able to cover greater areas than professional scientists whose field-study time is limited. Various citizen science programs have emerged to realize this potential. Thus underwater photographs of natural subjects become database records of geo-located and time-stamped species observations. The observed species may be identified by the contributor or by other website users or team members, depending on the platform. Various protocols for organization and self-directed study for snorkelers interested in natural science also exist. At Réunion island, these approaches have resulted in many new records and even the discovery of new species. The western half, located between Athinas Avenue and the sea, is covered with pine trees and consists of two peninsulas, Megalo and Mikro Kavouri ("Big Crab" and "Little Crab") that feature sandy and pebble beaches in between rocky shores, luxury hotels (including the Astir Palace Hotel occupying most of Mikro Kavouri), the local high school, the picturesque chapel of "St. George of the crab", two marinas, an aquatic sports club (the "Nautical Club of Vouliagmeni", see below), a sports club (soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis) and upscale restaurants, taverns and cafeterias on the waterfront. The Mikro Kavouri is connected to the mainland with a narrow, sandy isthmus commonly referred to as "Laimos" (λαιμός, i.e. the "Neck"), flanked by one public beach on one side and Astir Palace beach on the other side. The Megalo Kavouri is land largely owned by the Church of Greece, which maintains an enclosed, protected pine forest and an orphanage. An air force camp is also located there. Dotted with lavish villas, the two Kavouri areas are among the most expensive pieces of housing real estate in Greece. The Vouliagmeni beaches are consistently awarded the coveted EU blue flags for environmental excellence. The triathlon competition for the 2004 Summer Olympics took place in this area. The small, rocky islet of Fleves lies off shore. #Athens #exoticbeach #Greece #snorkeling #underwater #scuba #diving #vouliagmeni

Lake Vouliagmeni is one of Athens' most spectacular natural landscapes. It is a salt lake whose depth and connection to the ocean have never been discovered. Lake Vouliagmeni is located about 24 km from Athens, on a sophisticated, green coast southeast of the city. Not only is this lake one of Greece's many wonders, it also hides an incredible geological phenomenon. Lake Vouliagmeni boasts incredible therapeutic properties, fed regularly by underground hot springs and salty sea waters that guarantee temperatures ranging from 71°F to 79°F throughout the year. The water is always warm and rich in valuable minerals, combined with high concentrations of salts that help treat arthritis, rheumatism, dermatitis and gynecological ailments. This stunning body of water has been the result of the collapse of the top of an underground hot water quarry since the late 19th century. Its seabed consists of 14 underwater tunnels, one of which he is 800 m long and is still partially unexplored. In addition to hosting the only species of endangered sea anemone, there is also the presence of the Garalfa, a small fish native to Asia, also known as the "doctor fish," famous for eating dead skin cells. The lake is an atmospheric and magical place where you can swim and snorkel in its beneficial bodies of water, and walk or cycle on paths surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. There is also a beach club and a luxury wellness center on the shores of the lake. Near the lake there are numerous hotels, restaurants and all sorts of places where you can taste the specialties of Greek cuisine and enjoy the romantic scenery. Especially at night, the light illuminates the charming contours of the lake. A relaxing spa is just 20 minutes away. Drive from Athens. Subsribe on Happy Traveler - 🤍

The Vouliagmeni Riviera No matter what time of year you visit upscale Vouliagmeni, chances are you’ll feel like you’re on a summer holiday. Lake Vouliagmeni is a unique geological phenomen, located in an idyllic landscape of the Athenian Riviera, about an hour from central Athens. It is a natural brackish lake with healing properties located in a large cavern 260 meters long and 145 meters wide, close to the sea. Its waters are constantly replenished both by the sea and underground currents. It is also fed with fresh water from a spring located at a depth of 17 meters which is mainly responsible for the brackish nature of its water. The water temperature is steady throughout the year (22 °C -29 °C) and it never drops below 18 °C. It is considered possible that the lake communicates with the volcanic arc of the Aegean and is affected by an adjacent branch. Due to the warm water temperature and its rich content in hydrogen sulphide, the lake functions as a spa, making this place an excellent destination to get relief from afflictions such as for rheumatic diseases, sports injuries, diseases of the nervous system, skin and gynecological diseases. The lake communicates with the sea through underground tunnels never fully explored. According to scientific research and studies, thousands of years ago, where the lake is now, there was a large cave. Due to high temperature and moisture of the springs inside the cave, the roof collapsed. The cave has been explored to a length of 3,123 meters. Among the 14 tunnels which make it up, there is one tunnel 800 meters long which is believed to be the longest in the world. Lake Vouliagmeni hosts a variety of unique organisms including a species of sea anemone, Paranemonia vouliagmeniensis, which can be found exclusively in this lake. It is also famous for the Garra Rufa fish that nibble on your skin while swimming, offering free skin exfoliation. Lake Vouliagmeni is a unique tourist destination. There is a restaurant and a cafe with beach chairs and umbrellas where you sit, staring at the beautiful view this location offers. It is also perfect for swimming, snorkeling, healing and pleasure for both young and old. The lake with the surrounding area, has been declared a natural monument and has been listed in the NATURA 2000 National List as a protected site. In addition, it has been designated as a Place of Special Natural Beauty by the Ministry of Culture. The lake is found on the coastal road Athens - Sounio, shortly after Vouliagmeni. It is easily accessible by car and public transport as there are several buses that stop at the entrance of the lake. It is a hidden treasure of Attica’s nature and one of the top attractions of both Attica and Greece. 🤍allovergreece.com
