Make me a favour? Man, isn't there a rule so we know when to use do and when to use make in English? Yes, there is. Let's have a look. Now I've got lots of videos on commonly confused words and I've made a playlist for you which you can watch up there after this video. But today let's look at the rule for make and do in English. 00:33 When to use MAKE in English grammar We have lots to learn today. So let's start right now. I want you to look at these examples and tell me what they all have in common. A list, a mess, a sandwich, a paper, aeroplane. So what do all these have in common? Well, they're all things that we can create or produce or build or construct. And when we're talking about things like that, we use make. So let's have a look at some other examples of things we can create or produce or build and they don't have to be physical things, as we will see here. You can make a profit, make a loss, make money, or make a sale, make a sweater, make a scarf, or make a cup of tea. They're all things we can produce. So we use make. OK, look at these expressions here. Bread is made from flour. This toy was made in China. Well, we use make when we're talking about the origin of something like, where does it come from? It's from China. How is it made? It's made from flour. So when we're talking about the origin, we use make. OK, look at these expressions. Pollen makes me sneeze. Driving makes her tired. I told her a joke and it made her laugh. Can you see what these expressions have in common? We're talking about a reaction, causing a reaction. OK, my reaction to pollen is that it makes me sneeze. So this grammatical construction is really useful when we're talking about the reaction that something causes. Some other examples are this television programme makes me laugh. Sometimes I watch the news and it makes me sad. Don't say that to him. You will make him angry. Okay, here's an easy one for you. Can you tell me what all of these things have in common? A plan, a reservation, an appointment, an arrangement. Well, yes, these are all talking about plans, making plans. And for all these, we use make. Make a plan, make a reservation, make an appointment. And here are some other examples. You can make a booking or make a commitment and make an agreement. OK, a commitment or agreement in some way, you are talking about a plan for the future. So we use make. OK, this next category is a little bit more difficult, but let's see if you can see what these things have in common. Effort, decisions, choice, mistakes. Well, these are all words that we can use to talk about progress. Imagine you are doing some project or some job at work. To talk about the progress, these are some common words that you will use, and we use make for these. Some other examples of this are the word progress, make progress, make changes, make mistakes, make improvements and make a difference. OK, this next category is easy. I'm sure you can tell me what these things have in common. Let's have a look: a promise, a comment, a noise, an excuse, a suggestion, a joke. Yes, these are all things that we say. They're all sounds that we speak or noises in general. And when we're talking about sounds or speaking, we use make, make a promise, make an excuse, make noise, make a joke, etc. There are many other examples of this, but here are a few for you. Make a complaint, make a confession, make a phone call, make an apology, make a prediction. 5:47 Expressions with MAKE [Transcription unavailable...] 6:38 DO or MAKE a favour? Learn English: MAKE or DO?

"Stop making mistakes" or "stop doing mistakes? "Do" and "make" are some of the most used verbs in English, but they are regularly confused by English learners. I'm going to teach you the logic of when to use "make" and when to use "do". Watch this lesson and you'll understand how to use these verbs correctly. You'll also learn collocations: words that often go with "make" and "do", like "do the dishes", "do your homework", "make dinner", "make a call", and many more. Learning to use these two simple words correctly will make you sound much more fluent to native English speakers, so don't miss out! 🤍 TRANSCRIPT "To be or not to be?" that is the qu-... No, it's not the question. You are here to learn a lesson. Hi. I'm James from engVid, and today's lesson is going to be on "do" or "make". Well, why am I doing this lesson? Many students make a mistake with these two verbs. Okay? And the problem is native speakers almost never make this mistake, and as soon as you make this mistake we will know that you are just learning English or low-level English. So this lesson will help you fully understand how to use it so that you can start speaking like a native speaker right away. Now, in order to do that we have to clearly know what the difference is between "do" and "make", and then give examples of how we use them. I'll also give you collocations. Collocations are words that go with "do" and "make" regularly so you know even if you're having a difficult time, when you say something like: "cake", you're going to say "do" or "make". Let's find out in five seconds, shall we? Let's go to the board where I'll break down what "do" is and give you examples; what "make" is, give you examples; then I'll give you those collocations and a short quiz. All right. E, what is it, "do" or "make"? When I makes me a cake, do I do me a cake or make me a cake? Well, let's find out. If an action is repetitive, something you do on a regular basis, we're going to use the verb "do". Now, I should note very quickly here I am not going to talk on the auxiliary, like: "Do you like that?" I'm not going to ask these questions. We have other videos, so please go to engVid, go check them out, and they'll clearly do... Do, [laughs]. Show you the uses of "do" as the auxiliary. Okay? This is specifically how you understand it. If something is done repetitively, we use "do", which is true for most simple present verbs. When we talk in the simple present it's about repeated actions. So, "do" is no different from that. Okay? Obligation. An obligation might be something like I do homework every night. It's a thing I must do. Okay? So we use it for obligation. Multiple actions. Now, listen to me carefully. "I do the dishes." I'll give you a visual representation or a visual picture of it in a second, but I want you to understand the concept. A lot of times in English we use what's called "shorthand". Instead of saying every verb that I'm going to do, what I do is I use... Or I even said it here, replacing verbs. We put the verb "do" in and it talks about several actions in one go. Here's an example for you: When I do the dishes, I wash them, I dry them, I put them away. Notice there are three verbs. I don't want to say when someone says, like E goes: "Did you do the dishes?" Go: "Yes, I wash the dishes, I dry the dishes, I put the dishes away." They'll go: -"You new to Canada, correct?" -"Yes, very correct." Okay, so I said: "I'll do the dishes" or "I do the dishes". So, even under obligation I said: "I do the dishes every night", that's my obligation. And it's these actions I'm talking about. Repetitive because I do it every night, I repeat it. Okay? Multiple actions, so I've just went through, and replacement of verbs. This is similar to multiple actions, but you can use the verb "to do" to replace one verb, like: "Hey, man. I got to do my hair tonight." That means "fix", that might be cut my hair, it might be wash my hair, but when I got to do my hair, I got to do my hair, and do my nails. That means cut and clean. It's not saying multiple verbs. It's just replacing one verb, but we can put "do" in there and it replaces that verb, and we understand what it means. Is there something you have to do? Okay, I've killed that. Right? So why don't we go to "make"? "Make". "Make" is create, when you create something. Creation comes from it didn't exist and now it does. You create. That's making. And when I say "create", there's a big difference between the two. Okay? Notice when we talked about "do" we talked about repetitive, obligation, multiple actions, dah-dah-dah-dah. It's a verb of action and so is "make", but the difference is this: When I talk about "do", you can't see it. Sorry, you can see it, but you can't touch it. You can see me washing, but you can't touch me washing the dishes. It doesn't make sense.

When to use "do" and "make" | English grammar lesson

In this English grammar lesson, you will learn when to use "do" and "make". The general grammar rule is that we say "do" to describe an action and "make" when we create something. An example is we say "The chef is doing the cooking" So we use "do" to describe specific work, job or task. It is usually work that is regular and compulsory. We also use the verb "to do" to describe non-specific actions or activities. Example: "I want to do something." These sentences often contain words which identify the action as non-specific like something, anything, everything, nothing. We also use "do" to replace another verb if the meaning is clear, example "I am doing my hair" which means "I am brushing my hair." Finally there are lots of English expressions with "do" that you need to learn: -to do business -to do a favour for somebody. etc We use the verb "to make" mostly when something is created. For example, "Sarah made a dress." We also say "make" when we are preparing food or drink. Example, "I am making a coffee". Finally there are lots of expressions with make that you must learn because they are often exceptions to the grammar rules: -to make a choice -to make an appointment etc At the end of the English grammar lesson, there is an exercise to test your understanding. If you have any questions, please ask me in the comments section below the video lesson and I will answer. The accent in the video is a British English accent. LET & MAKE | How to Use These Two English Verbs | Verb Patterns

In this English lesson, learn how to use both 'let' and 'make'. Free Book ➜ 🤍 Watch my video on verb patterns here: 🤍 Watch the playlist that has my other lessons on verb patterns here: 🤍 ▼ Get Notifications of my latest videos ➜ 🤍 ▼ //////// TRANSCRIPT //////// Hello. This is Jack from and welcome to this English lesson on verb patterns and we're specifically going to look at the two verbs: let and make because these two verbs are a little bit different in terms of how we use them in sentences. So, you're going to learn how to form a sentence using these two verbs and I'll show you plenty of examples - speaking of examples let's start with two: My parents let me stay out late. So, here you can see we're using the verb let: my parents let me stay out late. Now, what this means is my parents allowed me to stay out late; they gave me permission to do this. Now, another example but this time using make: my parents made me make my bed every day. My parents made me make my bed every day. I'm sure you know what this means - it basically means that they forced me to do it but it's not quite as strong as the verb 'force'. Now, another thing to note is that in both of these sentences, I'm talking about the past: my parents let me stay out late when I was younger. My parents made me make my bed every day when I was younger too. So, let's look at how to form these sentences before looking at more examples. We start with a subject in most cases, so I gave two examples using my parents and then we just use make or let, ok: my parents made - my parents let. And then, we use the object my parents made me - my parents let me. I made you. I let you. And then, we use the bare infinitive - so, just the verb on its own: my parents made me do. My parents made me go etc. Hopefully, that isn't too confusing - more examples are going to help you. Here is another one: the teacher makes them do their homework. So, this is a simple example: I'm sure you've heard something like this before, but it just shows you exactly how we can use make: the teacher makes them do their homework. Her boss lets her work from home, so her boss lets her work from home. Her boss gives her permission to work from home. However, this woman is not so lucky and her boss is not as nice: her boss made her stay at work all night. Her boss made her stay at work all night. Now, for the last example, imagine that two security guys are talking to each other at a nightclub: one of them spots a guy. So, he sees a guy who he doesn't like someone who's maybe very drunk - someone who is maybe quite aggressive and he says to his other security friend: don't let that guy come in. So, in this case, we're using the imperative in the negative: don't let that guy come in. To learn more about verb patterns, watch this lesson.
