Asia’s most beautiful railway line? The “Main Line” cuts through tea plantations and jungle, then passes Buddhist temples and relicts of the British Empire. In the 19th century the British built a railway in what was then their colony of Ceylon. Their idea was to transport goods such as tea from the highlands to the port of Colombo. Today it’s mainly only locals and tourists who use the so-called "Main Line." The route is considered one of the most picturesque in the whole of Asia. Our trip takes us from the capital, Colombo, to Ella in the highlands. Our first stop is one of the country’s largest elephant orphanages. And then on to Kandy, the former capital of the Singhalese kingdom. The city is home to the famous Temple of the Tooth, which is said to house the Buddha’s top left canine. The train then winds its way further up into the highlands. We watch tea pickers at work and go to a tea factory to discover where the aroma comes from. Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka’s highest town at an altitude of almost 1900 meters, where a racecourse still brings the colonial era back to life. The stations have also retained their own colonial charm: in 1901, a signaling system was set up to make the long journey safer. Amidst the traffic chaos of Sri Lanka: the popular auto-rickshaws, or tuk-tuks. They’re traditionally driven by men. But increasingly, you’ll see a woman at the wheel - and this film is about three of them: Anulawathi, Thushari and Jega. Anulawathi, Thushari and Jega all do the same job: they’re auto rickshaw drivers in Sri Lanka, three women in a sector traditionally dominated by men. Besides being a popular mode of transport, the three-wheeled tuk-tuk also provides these three women with a reliable source of income. All three were left by their husbands and had to find a way to feed themselves and their children. They were forced to challenge societal norms. After all, in Sri Lanka, men are traditioanally seen as the providers. Male tuk-tuk drivers view their female colleagues as rivals. But unsurprisingly, female customers love them. Thushari lives in the capital Colombo. She is a longtime parent and works to support herself and her two daughters. Anuwalathi works in Kandy. She lived abroad for a few years and saved up enough money to buy her own tuk-tuk. Jega is also a single parent. She lives with her son and niece in the tourist resort of Hikkaduwa. Hello~! Kalian apa kabar? Gimana sekolahnya? Gimana kuliahnya? Gimana kerjaannya? Dan gimana kabar keluarga kalian~? Belakangan terakhir aku sedang sibuk parah sama setoran deadline editing. Udah biasa kayak gini gak sih? HAHAHA Pusing banget tapi dijalanin aja pelan-pelan. Kerjain satu persatu. Pasti nanti beres kok. S E M O G A ! - BTW aku senang banget deh karena bisa explore negara baru~! Jujur yah. Aku tuh gak nyangka kalo Sri Lanka semenyenangkan, sebagus dan sengangenin ini. WHY? Soalnya teman-teman aku kan belom pernah ada yang ke sana. Jangan kan itu. Mereka bahkan gak kepikiran mau ke sana untuk liburan. Sri Lanka bukan negara yang masuk ke dalam list liburan. Lalu aku cari informasi di internet. Seriusan. Bahkan informasi di internet gak sebagus dan se-wow ketika aku datang langsung ke negara ini. Ralat. Maksudnya infonya menarik. Tapi kenyataannya justru jauh lebih menarik ketika kita terjun langsung ke lapangan — terlepas kalian punya minat yang sama atau gak dengan aku — pasti kesan ketika kalian explore Sri Lanka tetap sama: 😲: "Hah. Ternyata Sri Lanka kayak gini? Gila. Gak nyangka." Pelajaran yang bisa diambil dari pengalaman aku ini adalah: Kita gak boleh apatis atau langsung terpengaruh sama orang lain sebelum kita ngalamin sendiri. 😆😆😆 - Ketika itu aku sampai hotelnya kan agak malam. Perut juga udah keroncongan banget. Akhirnya aku makan di salah satu restoran yang ada di hotel. Mereka ada restoran Jepang, Thailand dan India. Aku pilih restoran Jepang. Soalnya mau makan sushi sebelum besoknya explore makanan Sri Lanka. Tau nggak apa yang terjadi? Ada satu menu sushi yang aku pesan (aku lupa namanya dan tetap gak ingat meski liat menunya lagi huhuhu) dan kaget banget ketika makan itu. Rasa sushi rollnya tuh unik banget. Dalamnya ada potongan salmon dan kriuknya. Atasnya ada mayo pedas. Nah yang bikin unik adalah si mayo pedas ini. Rasa yang belum pernah aku rasain sebelumnya. Cie~ 😂🤣😂 Nggak lama, chefnya samperin meja aku. 🧑🏽🍳: Gimana makanannya? Kamu suka gak? 👽: Aku suka banget yang ini (tunjuk sushi). Rasanya gak seperti japanese sushi pada umumnya. Ada rasa yang unik di dalam sushi roll ini. 🧑🏽🍳:Iya, aku taruh sedikit sentuhan khas rasa Sri Lanka. Sedikit tapi bisa mengubah semua rasa. 👽: Oh, pantesan. Aku suka banget, Chef. Kamu luar biasa! ((Sayangnya, aku gak syuting bagian makan malam ini. Ya, emang gak ada di magic book juga sih.)) Setelah makan malam itu, aku makin gak sabar menyambut hari esok. Aku ngebatin semalaman; 👽: "Wah, pasti makanan Sri Lanka bakalan enak banget dan cocok di lidah aku. Sushinya aja kayak gitu apalagi yang lainnya~" Dan benar aja. Semua dugaan aku benar adanya. Semua makanan di episode ini, meski aku baru pertama kali makan dan ngerasain, tapi semuanya bikin aku kangen — tanpa terkecuali. Kalian gak bisa ngebayangin gimana sengsaranya aku ketika ngedit ini huuuuaaaaaa. Kangen mau makan lagi tapi bingung mau cari di mana. Kayak pacaran LDR yang udah kangen banget mau ketemu tapi terhalang jadwal dan juga ongkos. 😂🤣😂 Semoga perasaan, excitement dan rasa suka aku terhadap Sri Lanka juga sampai di hati kalian~ Aku berdoa semoga suatu saat nanti, kalian juga bisa napak tilas semua tempat yang pernah aku kunjungi.
