We’re all used to seeing ships sink in the movies, but sometimes real life can be more dramatic than fiction! From deep within the Getty Images archives comes some incredible footage of sinking ships captured on film from history including Andrea Doria, Klipfontein, the Flying Enterprise, HMS Barham, the ferry TEV Wahine and the Newarp Lightship. One of the interesting facts I learned from making this video is that Oceangate made a survey of the wreck of Andrea Doria in 2016 although not with their Titan submersible whose purpose was reserved exclusively for diving on Titanic. Fourteen minutes is all it took for Canadian Pacific Railway's RMS Empress of Ireland to sink below the icy Saint Lawrence River in Canada. 1,012 people lost their lives in a horrific disaster which happened in such a terribly short amount of time that many simple never found out what had hit them. Otherwise, you may be hit by some wreckage, a boat, or other people, and end up underwater. - The cold shock may pull you underwater even faster than hypothermia sets in. That's why it's vitally important to collect yourself. - Surprisingly, every ship sinks in a different way, depending on its center of gravity and size, the shape of its hull, and, of course, the cause of the accident. Probably the most famous shipwreck of all time, the Titanic, wasn't, in fact, the scariest or the worst in history. On April 27, 1865, the Sultana Steamboat carried more than 2,000 people instead of the regular 350. So, there was a broken boiler, an excess number of passengers, a lack of lifeboats, and not the best river conditions. At 2 am, the broken boiler, unable to withstand the load, suddenly exploded. It didn't leave many survivors, but it was not the only disaster at sea.
