Shark fin soup is probably one of the most controversial delicacies in the world and heres why. Traditionally commercial shark fishing boats would go out and remove the fins from live sharks and set them free to die. Sharks CANNOT live without their fins and would sink to their demise. This was the easiest and most profitable way for shark finning boats to make their money, as shark fins can easily exceed $100lb, whereas the shark meat itself was only worth a few dollars a pound. This is Cruel, inhumane and a horrible management of a fishery, no matter how you look at it. Shark fin soup has dated back to the song dynasty in the year 900, and it has become a symbol of wealth, prosperity and even believed to have medicinal benefits. I wanted to show people how to make shark fin soup from scratch sustainably and humanely. I recently harvested an Atlantic Blacktip shark for dinner. This species has no size limit and in Florida you can keep 1 per person per day with a saltwater fishing license. Shark populations in the U.S are the highest they have been years and are from endangered. Worldwide shark fin sales are decreasing and most countries have banned shark finning. PLEASE keep in mind the shark fins seen in this video were put to good use and the entire shark as consumed, I DO NOT condone live shark finning. Imitation Shark Fin Soup, a common street food dish in Hong Kong and Malaysia especially in night markets. Easy and fast soup recipe with an authentic taste of the original. 🤍 Due to its prestige, shark fin soup was once *the* dish often served at wedding banquets, birthday dinners of elders and of course, during Chinese New Year dinners. I used to enjoy the dish immensely until I learnt about the horrible truth of how sharks were tortured just to obtain their fins! Thankfully, the popularity of this dish is decreasing and substitutions of shark fins are now used to prepare shark fin soup. Although other ingredients were used instead, I really do think the taste and amazing flavours were kept intact in this dish as it was just as how I remembered it. The trick was to use homemade broth comprising of chicken drumstick and scallops for the best flavours. You may substitute dried scallops with a tablespoon of oyster sauce. A bit of dark soy sauce was used to give it some colour. If you like, prepare the broth hours in advance or it can be prepared 3 days earlier although I would not recommend the latter. It would be more delicious if freshly prepared. Serve this soup as an appetizer with a few drops of sesame oil and some Chinese black vinegar. Oh, so yummy! According to rough estimates of scientists, from 70 to 100 million sharks are caught every year around the world, and this threatens the shark population. So, in a few years, humanity can completely exterminate the sharks in oceans. According to scientific researches, some shark species have decreased by 80% in recent decades. Despite such a terrifying threat, shark fin soup is still consumed all over the world. Based on statistics, 95% of all shark food is consumed in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. If you think that nothing will be worse, you are mistaken. These statistics are growing at 5% annually. About 3 sharks are killed in the world every second. Up to 73 million sharks are killed in one year. Hong Kong is the world capital of the shark fin trade. In this city, fin soup is incredibly popular with everyone, both locals and tourists. This soup is considered a traditional dish. However, it’s hard to overcome traditions. Even the threat of extinction of an entire species doesn’t play a huge role. For example, if you attend a Chinese wedding and see that you are being served shark fin soup, this will indicate that you are visiting a fairly wealthy family with a very high social status. While eating such a dish, everyone should think that it takes up to 40 fins to cook... Usually, fins are bought from poachers who set the lowest price. On the other hand, in the center of Hong Kong, for a bowl of this soup, you will pay $120 or even more. Nevertheless, environmentalists are actively fighting for the shark population. Thus, under pressure from activists, many restaurants and hotels excluded this dish from the menu. This example was followed by airlines, which also excluded the dish from the business class menu. No matter how strong the resistance is, poachers continue to do their thing for the sake of big money. For example, in the regular market, the price of such a fin is close $300 or $500 per piece. Moreover, the whale shark has the most expensive fin in the world. Attention: its cost can grow up to $15,000 per piece!!

Hi Peeps! New video is released 🎉 In this video, i'm gonna share a very EASY Vegetarian Shark's Fin Soup Recipe to y'all, and what's best is this recipe will NOT use any artificial meat AT ALL! Super Healthy and Delicious! Here we go ^^ Ingredients : 1 L Water 1 L Water from soaking mushroom 100 gr Carrot (small diced / brunoise) 200 gr Jicama (Bengkoang) 8 pcs Shiitake mushrooms 150 gr Wood ear mushrooms 400 gr Corn Kernel 2 tsp Salt (or more if you'd like it to be saltier) 1/2 tsp Pepper 2 tsp Mushroom Bouillon 6 tbsp Cornstarch 3/4 cup Water 5 Eggs Cooking steps : 1. Boil the water and the water from soaking mushroom in a pot. 2. After the water is boiling, pour in the carrot, jicama and shiitake mushrooms into the pot and bring it to boil. 3. Then, add the wood ear mushrooms and corn kernel into the pot. Seasoned with salt, pepper and mushroom bouillon. Close the lid and bring it to boil again. 4. Mix the cornstarch with the water, and pour it little by little into the pot to thicken the soup. 5. Beat the eggs in a bowl. Swirl the beaten egg into the soup and keep cooking for another minute or two, or until the egg is completely cooked. 6. Serve the soup piping hot. Last but not least, I credited this video to my late aunt whom is like a mom to me and this recipe is based on the recipe book she left behind. Is this about shark conservation or culture conservation? Toronto banned the sale of shark fins in October. High fines have been imposed for possession, sale, trade and distribution of shark fins or their derivative products. Here, Vancouver, Richmond and Burnaby are working on trying to ban this pricey product from restaurant menus and banquets. Shark finning is questionable because of the way the animals are caught and treated. What is shark finning? Shark finning refers to the removal and retention of shark fins. Generally, the rest of the body is discarded in the ocean. The market: - 26 to 73 million sharks are harvested annually for their fins (estimation) - Retail price is around US$400 per kg. Why shark fin soup is considered a delicatessen? Shark fin soup was created by an emperor in the Sung Dynasty (AD 968) who wanted to show how powerful, wealthy and generous he was to his banquet guests. Serving the expensive dish came to be seen as a sign of respect. The dish became a popular delicacy by representing different things in Chinese culture such as prosperity and health at a traditional dinner banquet. It is a symbol of class and wealth. Traditionally, the groom's side of the family pays for the wedding banquet and folklore used to say that "a bride marrying into a family without shark fin soup on the table, is marry into a poor family." It’s not that difficult to make this dish, it can be made at home for the whole family to enjoy. It is delicious and satisfying! Serving : 5-6 people Ingredients: 1 piece of chicken breast Vegetarian shark's fin, winter noodles 150g (vegetarian shark fins can be washed well / if it is winter noodles, soak and soften, cut in half) 100g of crab meat (you can use crab fillet instead) Dried scallops (soak for 1 hour until soft, disassemble into thin strips) Shiitake mushrooms 2-3 pieces (soak and soften, slices) 3-4 black fungus (soak and soften, cut into thin strips) Water 1200 ml A small piece of ginger (patted flat) Shallots 2-3 pieces (flattened) Seasoning: 1 tbsp oyster sauce 1/2 tbsp of dark soy sauce 1 tbsp of soy sauce 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar A pinch of pepper 1 tbsp Shaoxing wine Thicken: Corn flour-2 tbsp + 2tbsp water Egg flower: 1 egg (beaten) Practice: 1. Boil a pot of hot water first, blanch the chicken breast to remove blood and impurities, take it for about 2-3 minutes, and set aside 2. Prepare a pot of 1200ml water and bring to a boil. Put the chicken breast, shallots and ginger in the pot and cook for about 30 minutes. Scoop up the chicken breast, shallots and ginger slices. 3. Tear the chicken breast into thin strips and set aside 4. Add dried scallops, chicken strips, crab meat, vegetarian shark fin, shiitake mushroom slices, black fungus strips, bring to a boil over medium heat, add seasonings. 5. Add corn flour water to thicken, you can add slowly to know the consistency you want. 6. Slowly add the eggs, stir evenly and then turn off the heat. 7. Then , we used an imitation type, that look the same, texture the same, taste? maybe-LOL ( this is just an educational video , although it is also tasty )
