🎁 FREE browser extension to grow your YouTube channel: 🤍 Let's say you want to create a mask, in this case, a rectangle-shaped one, and you want all the layers underneath to be visible inside that mask but not outside of it. One easy way of doing this, is by changing the "Mode" on this shape/mask to "Stencil Alpha". This way it will hide everything outside of the mask, including this white background. But what if you don't want it to affect ALL layers underneath your mask? Maybe you still want the background to be visible even outside of the mask? You can do this by changing the Shape Layer back to "Normal", change "Opacity" on this Shape Layer to 100% and then hide it. Now, go to the "Effects & Presets" window, search for "Set Matte" and drag and drop that effect onto one of the layers. Go the properties of that effect and next to "Take Matte From Layer", select your mask in the dropdown menu. Now, simply click on the word "Effects", click "Cmd + C" to copy the effect and then select all the layers where you want to apply this effect and click "Cmd + V". Now you have masked out ALL the shapes and the first row of text, but not the background. Alex Deaton (00:17): Hi, my name is Alex Deaton and I've been a motion designer for almost 10 years along the way. I've picked up some after effects work arounds that saved me from daily Adobe induced frustration migraines. One of these techniques is a shape layer workflow. I utilize in almost every project to avoid layer clutter and over complicated matting and pre-computer issues. And this tutorial I'll show you how to build single layer shaped pre comps, utilizing groups, merge paths, and simple path expressions. So you can kiss those redundant matte layers, goodbye forever to make things easier. You can download the project files I'm using in this video to follow along or to practice this technique. After you're done, watching details are in the description. Alex Deaton (01:04): Alpha mats and pre comps can be useful tools for combining several visual elements in a complicated design, but they make your timeline messy and introduce frustrating glitches and comp failures. When infinitely rests, rising pre comps or making layers 3d let's work around this by taking advantage of after effects, shape layer tools. We're going to start with a pair of eyes because this is a really, really simple way to use this trick. I use it all the time and it'll get you sort of, uh, oriented with the methods here so that you know what you're doing before you move into something a little more complicated like that vase. So let's jump into an empty empty comp here. So the first thing we're going to do is just go up here and grab an ellipse and, uh, real quick, we're going to twirl that down and change the size to a 500 by 500 seems about right, get rid of this stroke. Alex Deaton (01:53): I'm going to duplicate it. And then I'm just going to name this bottom layer here. I am going to go ahead and call it I'm main. So I know that that's, that's my main eye layer. Then up here, I'm going to name this pupil. Cool. So first I'm going to take this, I layer and change the color to white. Then I'm going to go to this pupil layer and I'm going to shrink it to a, let's say 300 by 300. Great. So now we have our eye and our pupil. So first what I want to do since I'm going to make this eye blink. And I don't want to just, uh, you know, use the dimensions here because that would look a little awkward. I want it to have like a more realistic looking blink. I'm going to change the path here to a Bezier path. Alex Deaton (02:37): So all you have to do is right click on the ellipse path and click convert to Bezier path. And that way I can animate the handles of the actual, uh, ellipse itself, like, like, so, so then once I have that finished, uh, I'm going to duplicate the eye main layer, rename it eye mask, and then simply pick whip the path of the mask to the, the main layer there. Like, so, and then I'm going to take this, drag it up here, highlight both the iron mask and the pupil and click command G to group those two together. I'm going to rename this whole group pupil. So now that we've got our pupil inside of this group here with our iron mask, all we need to do is make it so that the pupil itself can mask through the eye. This is where all the magic happens. 🎁 FREE browser extension to grow your YouTube channel: 🤍 There are different ways to center align objects and layers in After Effects and I'm going to show you two keyboard shortcuts that will automatically center your shape layer to the middle of your composition. First, click "Fn, Opt, Cmd, Left" simultaneously to first center align the anchor point of the shape layer to the center of the shape layer. Then, you click "Fn, cmd, left" to then center that same anchor point to the center of your composition. If you don't want to center the anchor point but only the shape, go to the Align window, choose "Align layers to Composition" and click "Align Horizontally" and "Align Vertically". Here’s a quick way to make a wave shape by essentially just drawing a straight line. First, create a shape layer with just a stroke by drawing a line across the screen. In the composition, find the shape layer, twirl down, and select the Add button. Choose Zig Zag, and adjust the size and ridges per segment to your liking. The go back to the Add button and choose Round Corners and adjust the radius as desired. This starts to form the wave shape. To stylize further, you can choose other options, such as Offset Paths. To draw the wave onto the screen, choose Trim Paths and adjust the end completion percentage as needed. Shape layers offer a lot of options, and as you can see here, you don’t always need to be an artist to create something. Project file and icons: 🤍 The Power of Shape Layers: 🤍 Hey everybody, and welcome back to another episode of 7 Minute AE Tutorials where you learn tips, tricks, and shortcuts usually in 7 minutes or less. No BS, just AE. The topic I'm covering today has been a source of frustration for me for years, and now I finally have a cohesive method that I'd like to share with all of you for morphing shapes. Like I said, there are a host of tutorials out there about morphing shapes. All the ones I've come across are cumbersome, time consuming, they require a lot of steps that just aren't effective, and few (if any) have consistent rules for this technique. Until now. There are just a few rules that you need to remember, which I'll be displaying on screen as we get to them. I'll also put these rules in the description below. I recommend you watch this tutorial a few times to really get a solid hold on this technique - once you understand the theory behind it, you'll be morphing shapes with ease. RULES: 1. Use the shape that's being animated in as a reference for the Guide Shape, making sure that the Scale of the Guide Shape is the same as the Scale of the Animation In Shape. 2. Convert all Shape Paths (including the Guide Shape) to Bezier Paths, unless the shape uses an Animation Tool, such as Trim Paths, Merge Paths, Repeater, Zig Zag, etc. 3. When a Path uses Trim Paths, don't morph the shape. Instead, animate the Trim Paths. 4. When a Group uses any other Animation Tool, don't morph the shape. Instead, animate the Group's Scale. 5. Morph large shapes only using the Path of the Guide Shape. Animate the Scale of small shapes. 6. Animate the Color of the Animation Out Shape into the Color of the Animation In Shape. 7. We're only scratching the surface of what this powerful tool can do, but you'll have a solid understanding of how to access and use the Repeater, what its purposes is, and see the potential for what you can do. A good way to learn more about thing like shape layers and its elements is to experiment - a lot. Use the knowledge you get here and apply it in your own creative way. Shape layers are great for creating transitions, patterns, icons, characters, and so much more. Remeber, you can always save shape layers as presets and use them in future projects. To save shape layers (with or without the Repeater), simply highlight all of your contents in the shape layer, click Animation - Save Animation Preset - and name the file. It's that simple!
