PUNA, Hawai'i - The final site selection and planning for a proposed new transit hub and co-located library in Pāhoa Town is underway. "The transit hub and library are intended to support comfort and safety for transit riders, promote other multi-modal uses such as walking and biking, and provide amenities and gathering spaces for the greater Pāhoa community," the County says. Since Lā Honua (Earth Day) just recently occurred, I figure I go make some TikToks to highlight the ʻāina I was raised on and currently reside, Waiakahiʻula. ✊🏽 It’s been disturbing and disheartening to see the many changes that have been going on here in Waiakahiʻula (also known as the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision) lately. So many local and Hawaiian families have since moved away (a good number of them left for the continent) and in their place have come hoards of haole. Our once quiet beach park is now constantly filled with malihini walking their dogs, doing yoga, upon other random af activities. Many fishing trails are gone and in place are humongous haole owned houses that are often used as “vacation rentals.” It’s almost as if everything I learned about in the Hawaiian Studies program back at UH Mānoa (colonialism, gentrification, erasure, etc) is now occurring directly in my own neighborhood. 😦 And now with the new up and running Puna Kai Shopping Center, (which lets keep it real, the prices there are NOT for us ʻōiwi) I can only imagine that more and more haole will invest in the properties here. I know some will say, just leave it up to Tūtū Pele to handle it. It’s her land. But idk… I don’t think our akua would appreciate us kānaka just sitting idly by when our ʻāina could use our help. We’ll see though. I did have a dream last year that a new fissure opened up at the top of Kahakai Blvd and it totally changed the landscape down here. 🙃🌋🔥 Anyways… The point of this post is to document that there IS a kanaka down here in Waiakahiʻula in 2022, who is NOT happy with what he is seeing. ʻOia wale. On May 24th, of this year, a huge 180 pound wild boar was killed by professional hunter Iwikauika near the Jungle Farmhouse in Pahoa, HI on the Big Island. Iwikauika describes the hunt and what happened when his brave hunting dogs cornered the boar in the jungle! Iwikauika said it was one of the largest boars he has ever killed and he will be using it to make wild boar sausage. The Jungle Farmhouse is vacation rental on an organic 2.3 acre farm and wild boar often pass through the property. For more information go to: 🤍pahoa.info
