Links between holiday traditions and pagan culture are well established - and occasionally celebrated - but there are also a lot of misconceptions about paganism that make the word itself a bit taboo. Paganism isn't something to be feared or shunned. In Latin, "pagan" was simply the word for villager or civilian. Religious connotations that developed during the Middle Ages made pagans into heathens rather than outsiders. Did paganism survive all through the Middle Ages, as scholars once thought, remaining the religion of the common people, while the elite had embraced Christianity? Or did it die out earlier? This lecture will consider a broad range of evidence, including figures in seasonal folk rites, carvings in churches, the records of trials for witchcraft and a continuing veneration of natural places such as wells. It will also compare ancient paganism and medieval Christianity as successive religious systems. Και κάπως έτσι ξεκίνησε η μυσταγωγία στο Κύτταρο.. Η «Καρότσα», ή «Μαύρη ήταν καρότσα» όπως το ονομάζουν στην Αλιστράτη Σερρών από όπου κατάγεται, είναι ένα σκοτεινό μοιρολόι. Ο θρύλος λέει πως αναφέρεται στα κορίτσια που στο παρελθόν απήγαγαν με τη βία από τα σπίτια και τις οικογένειες τους, για να τα εκμεταλλευτούν με οποιοδήποτε τρόπο. Τραγουδούν όλοι με μια φωνή για το Λενάκι, το Κατινάκι και όλα τα κλεμμένα κορίτσια που υποφέρουν κάπου σκλαβωμένα. Σήμερα που η παράνομη διακίνηση ανθρώπων (trafficking) αποτελεί πλέον παγκόσμια βιομηχανία, το τραγούδι παραμένει δυστυχώς πολύ επίκαιρο και όχι μία ανάμνηση από τις σκοτεινές περιόδους της ανθρώπινης ιστορίας. I forgot the Felire of Óengus did suggest November 1st was the date of Samhain. However, it also doesn’t suggest Samhain was a religious festival or had any rituals associated with it. Samhain seemed to be a calendrical date to indicate the end of summer. Samhain most likely meant “summers end.” Later reliable sources suggest it may have been a time of feasting and games, but there is no reference to any rituals associated with Samhain. Also, considering the celts didn’t use a Gregorian or Julian Calendar, the date of 11/1 is likely a Christian approximation. The celts used a lunar-solar calendar, meaning the date of Samhain would have varied from year to year.
Many have suggested that there are serious connections between the Christian celebration of Christmas and the Roman celebrations of their pagan gods, particularly Sol Invictus and Saturnalia.
