La calle Las Heras ofrece de todo. Una de las avenidas más visitadas por mendocinos y turistas es Las Heras. En cualquier horario que uno la transite, se ve repleta de gente. Familias, amigos y solitarios, todos la eligen para pasear, comprar o como vía para llegar a otro destino. Los vendedores ambulantes son moneda corriente. Las heladerías, en verano, están abarrotadas de gente. Nace en su intersección con calle San Martín y su recorrido es de apenas ocho cuadras, hasta calle Belgrano, donde persisten los restos de la antigua estación del ferrocarril. Su trazado se da en sentido este-oeste, doble mano. Y como buena calle mendocina, es una fija que la gente no caminará hasta los semáforos y las sendas peatonales para cruzar. Lo hará por la mitad de la calle, arriesgando su vida y frenando a mitad de la calzada ya que ningún auto le cederá el paso. Fue inaugurada en 1885, años después del gran terremoto de 1861 y con la implementación de la primera línea de tranvías a caballo. Su nombre lo recibió por resolución municipal, en honor a Juan Gualberto Gregorio de Las Heras, que fue General del Ejército de Los Andes y Gobernador de Buenos Aires. Sin embargo, los mendocinos se resistían. Prefirieron llamarla, al menos hasta 1900, la Calle de las Carretas. Éste se debía a que en esa calle se estacionaban esos vehículos, para cargar mercadería que llegaba desde distintos puntos del país y la trasladaban por toda la ciudad. En 1911, en la esquina con calle Libertad (hoy llamada Patricias Mendocinas) se inauguró el primer Mercado Central. Con el correr de los años, la tradicional avenida comenzó a registrar un notable impulso y a partir del 18 de setiembre de 1957, tras las inquietudes de los comerciantes de la calle, fundaron la Asociación Amigos de Avenida Las Heras. Los dirigentes de esa entidad tuvieron como primer objetivo, mejorar la imagen de la avenida y una de las tareas iniciales, desde el aspecto urbanístico, consistió en ampliar la iluminación con tubos fluorescente que. por esos años, era lo último en tecnología.
