lichen planus is an inflammatory condition of the skin and mucous membranes. Lichen planus occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks cells of the skin or mucous membranes. On skin, lichen planus appears as purplish, itchy, flat-topped bumps. On mucous membranes, such as in the mouth, it forms lacy, white patches, sometimes with painful sores. Lichen planus usually goes away on its own. This shrub, on Mitcham Common, near the east side of Cedars Avenue, is covered with what looks like a yellow moss. It is actually lichen, which isn't a plant by itself. Lichen consists of algae and fungi, existing together in a symbiotic relationship. The fungus fixes itself to the branches. The alga, with its ability to photosynthesise, provides the fungus with organic food and in return receives water, essential mineral salts and shelter. This is an intensely puritic skin condition. The itch most probably is causes by localised deposit of amyloid like substances in the skin. I think I found my first Usnea! Usnea, also known as Old Man’s Beard, is a lichen-like structure of algae and fungus that grows in deciduous trees (trees that lose their leaves). It has long been used in traditional medicine for urinary ailments, inflammation and wounds of the mouth, to sooth sore throats, reduce pain/fever, and aid in weight loss. I’ll probably post a follow up video once I can get a closer inspection on this fun little lichen.
