This video is very simple. If you want to be successful at overseeding, you need to follow these easy steps.... 1. Mow Low Mowing low before overseeding is a crucial step in ensuring the success of a new grass seed application. By cutting the existing grass to a shorter height, typically around 1-2 inches, you create several advantages for the overseeding process. It reduces competition for sunlight, water, and nutrients, and increases seed to soil contact allowing the newly sown seeds to establish themselves more effectively. 2. Dethatch Dethatching before overseeding is a critical preparatory step in achieving a thriving and resilient lawn. Thatch, which is a layer of dead grass, roots, and other organic matter that accumulates on the soil surface, can impede the success of overseeding in several ways. By removing this dense barrier, overseed can make better contact with the soil, ensuring optimal seed-to-soil contact for germination. 3. Choosing the right seed Selecting the right grass seed is a pivotal decision when it comes to overseeding, as it directly influences the outcome of your lawn. Different grass species and varieties possess varying characteristics, such as color, shade tolerance, drought resistance, and durability, which can impact the overall performance and aesthetics of your lawn. 4. Are you Planning on OVERSEEDING your LAWN? Watch this First. In this video, We will show you 7 Stupid mistakes that most beginners make when Seeding their Lawn. When grass seeding a lawn it is important to mow your lawn short right before you overseed. By mowing low you will give the new grass seeds a head start to germination by reducing the risk of overcrowding the existing grass. Depending on what grass seed you are seeding such as Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass or tall fescue, it can take anywhere from 3 days to a couple weeks to for the seed to germinate. Also it is important to rough up the soil before you seed / overseed. The absolute best way is to use a hallow tine lawn aerator and/or a dethatcher . Aeration is good for a couple reasons, first being in relieves compaction in your soil and can increase seed to soil contact when overseeding. Dethatching will open up the canopy of the grass and help the seed fall directly into the soil. If you had to choose only one out of the two than I would recommend aerating as not only will it open the soil up but it will also break through the thatch layer as well. Most people think they have to till there soil before the seed or overseed their grass. Preparing soil for grass seed does not include tilling it. Tilling will leave you with soil that will settle unevenly and cause extreme bumps and lumps in your lawn over time. Not to mention tilling will alter the water structure of how clay your clay soil has settled. If you till it will force the soil to recompact and can make water sit on top of the compacted soil. A lot of people like to throw down fertilizers that are nitrogen heavy before they overseed but there is really no need for it. Adding nitrogen when you overseed will give your existing grass a surge of growth causing it to choke out the new seedlings, this is especially true when overseeding Kentucky Bluegrass WITH Kentucky Bluegrass. Instead I like to apply a pure phosphorus fertilizer called TSP aka Triple Super Phosphate will has all the benefits of traditional starter fertilizer minus the added nitrogen. One annoying thing about seeding is accidentally throwing seed in places it shouldn’t go such as your mulch beds. One way to avoid this is by using a drop spreader around all perimeters of your lawn. A drop spread will give you much more control when laying down seed. Once you throw down you seed, you should roll it in to increase seed to soil contact. The most important factor in having a successful overseed is proper watering. It can be challenging to keep up with it especially if you don’t have an irrigation system. Do not give up on watering midway through your project. The best way ive found to have consistent watering habits is by using the Hunter Mp stake irrigation system. It is fully diy and requires no digging. It hooks up to your hose line and uses a bluetooth controller that you can control from your phone in order to set up schedules for watering. In this video, I'll be sharing some tips and tricks on how to renovate your lawn to achieve a thick and lush green lawn. First things first, I start by cutting the lawn a little shorter than usual. While scalping a lawn before seeding can have some cons, such as exposing the soil to more sunlight and increasing the risk of weed growth, it also has its pros. Scalping helps to remove dead grass and create a clear surface for new growth to emerge. Next up, aeration! Aerating your lawn is a vital step in lawn renovation as it allows air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deep into the soil. This helps to promote root growth and create a healthy environment for new seedlings to thrive. After aeration, I scarify the lawn to remove thatch. Thatch is a layer of dead grass, leaves, and other debris that accumulates on top of the soil. Removing thatch from a lawn is essential as it allows the grass to receive better access to water, air, and nutrients, creating an ideal environment for seedlings to take root. Once the debris has been cleared up and the lawn has been mowed to remove any remaining debris, it's time to mix up some soil in a compost roller along with some heat-treated weed-free bagged screen topsoil with grass seed. The seed I used for this project is rye and fescue, which is an excellent choice for a shaded lawn as it is tolerant of low light conditions. Using a lawn lute, I work the material into the lawn to ensure even distribution. Finally, I spray on some seaweed. Overseeding your Lawn will make it look INCREDIBLE! In this video, we go over the exact steps on how to seed and overseed your lawn. 1. Tools needed- The first tool needed for overseeding grass is a seed spreader, I prefer to use the manual Scotts spreader as the small size leads to a very controlled application of grass seed. The second thing we will need is the grass seed itself. The third thing is a lawn sprinkler with a misting setting. 2. Timing is EVERYTHING- The number one factor that will determine the success of your seeding project is timing. Some people like pre germinating grass seed to help speed up the process but personally, we like to have our seed down on the ground by labor day weekend when overseeding in the fall. 3. Scalp before Seeding- Its important to mow your lawn down low before overseeding to give you baby grass seeds the best chance of to germinate. By mowing mow, it will allow sun to get down to the soil encouraging the new grass to grow. Also by mowing low, you will shock the existing grass and stunt its growth which will be beneficial to the new grass seed to grow. 4. Grass Seed- Grass seed will be the most expensive part of our project. If your not sure what type of grass you have then I recommend getting the Scotts sun and shade grass seed or the Jonathan Green Sun and shade grass seed which both contain a mix of perennial ryegrass, kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue. These both contain a mix of grass that can blend well in any lawn. 5. Lawn Roller- This step is optional but is highly recommended. You can rent a lawn roller at your local tool store for a fairly cheap price. Rolling your grass seed after applying will press the seeds directly into the soil which will increase your chances of having seed to soil contact. 6. Fertilizer- There are many fertilizers you can use when seeding. Today we will be applying an organic Milorganite type of fertilizer that has a high amount of phosphorus. The number one nutrient that helps develops strong roots to your new grass is phosphorus. 7. WATER WATER WATER- Proper watering is the number one most important factor when it comes to successfully seeding your lawn. We want to keep the top layer of soil moist at ALL times during the germination process. This usually equates to water 3-4 times a day for 5 minutes each time. Overseeding is one of the best ways to transform you lawn in the fall, but there is a much easier and cheaper way to do it. If you plan to overseed your lawn this year, maybe you should think twice before doing so. Today I'm going to introduce to you, the fall nitrogen blitz. The fall nitrogen blitz is a fertilizing program that can completely transform your lawn this fall as well as the following spring. If you're looking for a way to get a better lawn, this is one of the most important things you can do for you lawn all year. When starting my fall lawn care, I usually use urea or ammonium sulfate as my go to fertilizers. The reason I use these fertilizers is because they are fast-release fertilizers and go to work instantly. You can use slow release fertilizers like Milorganite for the first application or two, but I would recommend switching to urea or ammonium sulfate after that, because Milorganite will not break down as easy once temperatures start to fall. The one negative with this plan is that your grass will grow very fast, which means you need to mow your lawn more often. Make sure you are lawn mowing as often as possible so you do not break the 1/3rd rule and stress out your lawn. This will help achieve a thick lawn this fall. I have completed my fall overseeding for 2022 so our 2023 lawn is on the way. I decided to test overseeding this year without aerating. I typically like aerating because it helps to prepare a seed bed for the seed to fall into for germination. We will see how this goes. Hope you enjoy the video! Just Know...We Workin'!!! Are you Seeding your Lawn this SPRING? In this video , I cover 3 important steps that will help your spring seeding project be successful. Spring seeding is not the best time for planting cools season grass. But there are a few things you can do to improve your success. Aim to seed early in the season, but wait until soil temperatures are at least 50 degrees. This roughly corresponds to the optimal soil temperatures for cool season grass seed germination. Early spring seeding, when the soil temps are in the 50’s will help the grass get ahead start developing deep roots before the summer heat arrives. Late seeding doesn't allow much time for the grass to develop a strong root mass. Another big concern with seeding is the spring is large amounts of weed pressure. To combat this issue, we will need to apply a special herbicide that will allow the grass to seed while preventing and killing weeds. The only herbicide that will allow for this is tenacity aka mesotrione. I will be applying the granular form of tenacity by Scotts called Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food For New Grass Plus Weed Preventer. Not only does this product contain weed preventer but it also includes fertilizer as well. And last but not least, the most important this for a successful spring seeding is WATER WATER WATER. Water the grass at least 3 times a day and keep the seed moist to ensure fast germination, don’t allow it to dry out! And when the summer temperatures get here, water a half inch consistently every 2-3 days. Make sure to keep your eyes open during your regular watering schedule and make sure the grass doesn’t look like its struggling or drying out, if it is be sure to water it again additional from your regular secured watering. Seeding your lawn in spring is defiantly not easy, but its possible with the proper preparation and knowledge. Good Luck! There's nothing quite like mowing a flat and level lawn and after my irrigation was installed, the front yard needed some work on leveling to fix the lawn for reel mowing.
