Here is a notable view to the virtual eye of a place that was once untarnished. A town once acclaimed for it's vast expanse of rolling hills, rich flora and fauna, clean streets, fresh air and a rich history. That WAS Kalimpong. The glorious days, the striking views is no more for we have transformed it into a profit oriented hub- bub with our mercenary attitude. We have ravaged our pristine town and razed it to a point of no return by senseless deforestation, resulting in the mushrooming of concrete everywhere. Farming lands replaced by residential colonies, increase in vehicles and therefore pollution. A reality check is the need of the hour for the aerial view of Kalimpong is not what we perceive at the ground level. The present town is crowded, chaotic, filthy, unsympathetic and selfish. Are we going to carry on with this apathetic attitude? Cause we are running out of time. Kalimpong is a virgin hill station in West Bengal renowned for its panoramic valley views, Buddhists monasteries and churches and Tibetan handicrafts etc. The first thing that strikes the traveler visiting Kalimpong is its quiet atmosphere. The peaceful ambience that pervades is heightened by the presence of monasteries and churches across the town. Kalimpong is also known for its bustling bazaars and traditional handicrafts. It is famous for its orchids and nurseries. Kalimpong offers panoramic view of the great Himalayan ranges that lie beyond it. Kalimpong is an east Indian hill town in the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal. Perched on a ridge above the Teesta River, it’s home to colonial-era buildings like MacFarlane Memorial Church, named after a Scottish missionary. South, the hilltop Durpin Monastery, or Zang Dhok Palri Phodang, contains sacred Buddhist scriptures. Deolo Park has landscaped gardens and offers views of the town and surrounding hills. Kalimpong is a very nice place for touring throughout the year because of its pleasant weather. This hill station is often wrapped up by fog in between monsoon and winter. So, best time to visit Kalimpong is either March to May or September to November. Tourists Attractions There are a number of places of tourist interest in Kalimpong. Kalimpong has three important gompas or monasteries: the Tharpa Choeling Gompa, the Tongsa Gompa and Zong Dog Palri Fo-Brang Gompa. The Tharpa Choeling Gompa was established in 1922 and belongs to the Yellow Hat (Gelukpa) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. His Highness the Dalai Lama also belongs to this sect, which was founded in the 14th century in Tibet. The Tongsa Gompa is located near the Tharpa Choeling Gompa. It is the oldest monastery in Kalimpong and was founded in 1692. The present building is constructed over the ruins of the original monastery, which was raised by the Gurkhas, in the pre-British era. The Zong Dog Palri Fo-Brang Gompa was built in the mid-1970s on Durpin Hill and is located 5 km south from the town center. It was consecrated by His Highness the Dalai Lama. This monastery is famous for its traditional Tibetan wall paintings. Kalimpong is an important flower producing center and it produces 80% of the total gladioli produced in India. There are numerous nurseries in Kalimpong, which excel in production of orchids. Travelers can visit some important nurseries across the town and look at their collection of flowers, orchids and cacti. Other places to visit in Kalimpong include the Sericulture Research Institute, Dr Graham's Home and the adjoining chapel (located on the slopes of Deolo Hill), and the Nature Interpretation Center (located on Rinkingpong road). Hello! my people, First of all, thank you! for showering your love towards our Offbeat North Bengal series and hopefully you keep loving and sharing it. Saying so, here is another offbeat tourist place name Kalimpong, which is a district in itself and is located only a few KMs away from Sittong, in North Bengal. You won't believe the vibe there is so awesome. We absolutely loved our homestay there. OMG! the place was totally covered in clouds, I have never experienced such a thing. It was breathtaking. On top of that there are so many places to explore in the hill station, like Deolo park that blooms with Azalea flowers this season, and you can do paragliding there as well. Along with it there are beautiful monasteries and temples there and much more. You can easily complete your trip within 2 days. Honestly its a perfect destination to escape the deadly heat waves. I just feel like going back into the clouds, literally speaking.
