Le 26 septembre 2002, Le Joola qui assurait la liaison entre Ziguinchor en Casamance et Dakar, la capitale sénégalaise, se retournait en quelques minutes, avec près de 2 000 passagers à son bord. Il gît désormais aux larges des côtes gambiennes, à une vingtaine de mètres de profondeur. Pour documenter l’état du navire, l’Etat sénégalais a commandé un audit sous-marin à une équipe franco-sénégalaise de plongeurs. Marc Langleur, membre de la mission a décrit « une épave fortement délabrée ». Les véhicules dans la soute n'étaient pas amarrés. Le capitaine a sans doute commis une erreur de navigation. Les familles des victimes ont tenté d'obtenir toute la vérité, certaines portant plainte contre l'État sénégalais pour "négligence". Un dossier classé sans suite au Sénégal, dès 2003.
