Christianity and Judaism have a lot in common, not a huge surprise given Christianity’s Jewish roots. But there’s a major point of difference between the two religions — Jesus. To the Jews, Jesus was a man; to Christians, a messiah, which is a pretty fundamental difference of opinion — and it’s one (of many) that’s shaped the history of Jewish-Christian relations over the centuries. John P. Meier, a Catholic priest, is professor of New Testament at the University of Notre Dame. He is perhaps the foremost biblical scholar of his generation. Meier's work represents the first time an American Catholic biblical scholar has attempted a full-scale, rigorously scientific treatment of the "historical Jesus." By the "historical Jesus," Meier means the Jesus whom we can recover or reconstruct by using the tools of modern historical research. (10 Mar 2017) LEAD IN : Jesus of Nazareth also known as King of the Jews, presents a challenging problem for modern Jewish artists. How do they present this figure, so central to westen art and theology ? An exhibition at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem is tackling the once taboo issue. STORYLINE: "Behold the Man: Jesus in Israeli Art". Marc Chagall's painting "The Crucifixion in Yellow" is featured in a new exhibition at The Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The exhibit's name references the words Pontius Pilate is said to have uttered when Jesus was shown to the crowds before his crucifixion. The exhibtion spans some 130 years of work by artists, whose common theme is that Jesus Christ features as the central figure in the art work. On display are 150 works by some 40 artists, ranging from Reuven Rubin, to Marc Chagall, to Sigalit Landau. The curator of the exhibit, Amitai Mendelsohn, says the artists claim Jesus as one of their one, whilst remaining sceptical about his divinity. "This exhibition explores the figure of Jesus in Israeli art. It comprises about 130 years of creation, from the second half of the 19th Century until today through the artists, 150 works of art, a very large exhibition. It starts with the idea of Jews looking again at the figure of Jesus, putting him inside of their art as a Jew, in the beginning as a kind of a bridge between the Jewish world and the Christian world because Jesus was a Jew, getting back to Judaism as a universal figure, a prophet figure, a figure of moral importance without believing in his divinity. That's very important to say in a general word because this whole exhibition is about the way the Jewish artist depict the figure of Jesus" says Mendelsohn. The works have been sourced from the museum's archive and from private and public collections in Israel and internationally, including the Polish National Museum, Warsaw, and the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Mendelsohn says that Jesus has long been a taboo subject in Israeli culture. "In Israel there's a sort of a blank spot that has to do with the Christian story because Christianity is of course part of the landscape in Israel and of course it's the biggest cultural influence on Israeli culture in general. But, in a way Jews have a sort of a blind spot to the Christian theology, to the figure of Jesus, also because of the fact that he is considered a kind of a taboo sort of area. So for me this process was about finding Jesus in the works of Israeli artists and looking at the different levels in which he's portrayed." Polish artist Maurycy Gottlieb is typical of the Jewish artists featured, many of whom struggled to reconcile their spiritual, cultural and national identities during a time of great change, both in Jewish life and in European society. Russian artist Marc Chagall is often viewed as an historian of the 20th century. Through rich, colourful allegories of the two world wars, the Russian Revolution and his experience as a Jew fleeing Nazi Europe, Chagall's paintings portrayed an account of the turbulent 20th century. Images of pogroms, Russian soldiers, war and Jewish persecution are juxtaposed with Judeo-Christian iconography. Chagall and Maurycy Gottlieb used the image of Jesus both as a bridge of reconciliation between Jews and Christians and as an emblem of the persecuted Jew. Visitor Anat Dycian says the exhibition was not only about Jews as the image of Jesus encompasses a wider meaning. "He can be a symbol for a lot of things, for compassion also but also for suffering, Dycian says. The exhibition ends on the eve of Easter. Superman adaptations, particularly films, are really, really fond of framing Clark Kent / Kal-El as some sort of Jesus Christ figure. Whether this symbolism is visual or narrative in nature, it is very visible, perhaps more than ever in Zack Snyder's treatment of the character in the so-called 'Snyderverse'. The link is older than this, but it isn't anywhere near as old as the Man of Steel himself. In this video, we get into the history of this link, as well as why it often fails to pay off, thematically speaking, and some alternative options DC could look into going forward. P.S. It was pointed out to me recently that in videos discussing Jewish culture, I should probably be doing more to elevate Jewish voices. The character was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, and debuted in the comic book Action Comics #1 (cover-dated June 1938 and published April 18, 1938). Superman has been adapted to a number of other media, which includes radio serials, novels, movies, television shows, and theatre. Superman was born on the fictional planet Krypton and was named Kal-El. As a baby, his parents sent him to Earth in a small spaceship moments before Krypton was destroyed in a natural cataclysm. His ship landed in the American countryside, near the fictional town of Smallville. He was found and adopted by farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent, who named him Clark Kent. Clark developed various superhuman abilities, such as incredible strength and impervious skin. His adoptive parents advised him to use his abilities for the benefit of humanity, and he decided to fight crime. To protect his personal life, he changes into a colourful costume and uses the alias "Superman" when fighting crime. Clark resides in the fictional American city of Metropolis, where he works as a journalist for the Daily Planet. Superman's supporting characters include his love interest and fellow journalist Lois Lane, Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen and editor-in-chief Perry White, and his enemies include General Zod, Brainiac, and his archenemy Lex Luthor. In Man of Steel Clark learns about the source of his abilities and his real home when he enters a Kryptonian ship in the Artic. However, an old enemy follows him to Earth in search of a codex and brings destruction.

Tonight we welcome Josh Sofaer from Jews for Jesus as he presents a message from Leviticus 23. The "Gospel in the Feasts of Israel" message focuses on the seven chief Old Testament holidays or feasts. Josh explains the purpose of these celebrations both then and now. He then shows how the coming of Jesus fulfilled those feasts and gave them a larger meaning. This is an excellent teaching on the relationship of the Old and New Testaments. It also reveals the opportunities for Jewish evangelism throughout the year. Written by Eef Barzelay I was searching for something I could not describe So I stared at the sun till the tears filled my eyes Well, I thought I was empty so I paid the cost But now that I'm found I miss being lost Well, I opened my heart and I let Jesus in With the promise that I would be free of my sins But I only felt guilty that He died on the cross Now that I'm found I miss being lost Now that I'm found I miss being lost Well, I don't wanna suffer and I don't wanna die I want the clouds parted in endless, blue sky But someone up there has a different plan Now that I'm saved, I wish I was damned Now that I'm saved, I wish I was damned Now that I'm saved, I wish I was damned Now that I'm saved, I wish I was
In 610 CE, Muhammad had revelatory visions in a cave in Medina, revelations that would later make up the Quran and the commandments of Islam. Meanwhile, the Jews of the Arabian Peninsula were finally living in relative safety after years of tortuous oppression by the Byzantine Christians. Muhammad was forced to flee from Mecca to Medina, where Jewish tribes who had lived there for generations were more accepting of his monotheistic beliefs. In fact, Muhammad and his followers even adopted many Jewish customs. However, the Jews did not accept Muhammad’s claims to prophecy and things took a negative turn between the early Muslims and the Jews. As Muhammad’s followers continued to conquer much of the Middle East and North Africa, the Jews in these lands were given “dhimmi” status. This meant that if they paid the annual tax and kept their heads down, they could generally live without fear. And while the system occasionally broke down, this relative freedom enabled a flourishing of Jewish thought and set the stage for some of Judaism’s most influential scholars and philosophers. While en route to Jerusalem, Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” and “Who do you say that I am?” Jews have continued to wrestle with these questions ever since. For some, Jesus is the cause of all the misfortune that Jews have endured for the past 2,000 years. For others, Jesus is a prophet, a rabbi (teacher), an ‘older brother’, or Israel’s greatest native son. And still, for others, Jesus is the promised Messiah foretold by Moses and the prophets. In this session, Avi examines the history of Jewish viewpoints about Jesus and maintains that Yeshua is who He claimed to be – God the Son who died for sins and rose from the dead. Why all the hate for the Jews? Before we look at why people hate Jews, also known as Antisemitism, we need to define “Jew.” A Jew is someone who identifies with the cultural community whose traditional religion is Judaism and who traces their ancestry to the ancient Hebrew people of Israel, all the way back to Abraham. Jewish people are considered an ethnoreligious group. Both an ethnic group and a religion. There are plenty who identify as Jews yet are not religious. Israel’s Law of Return, which is the law that gives Jews the right to visit and be a citizen of Israel, says a Jew is someone with either a Jewish mother or who has converted to Judaism. Anyway, during the time of Jesus in ancient Israel, many were of course Jewish, including Jesus himself. After Jesus died, his followers started a new religion called Christianity. As Christianity spread, and as more and more Roman emperors converted to the religion, Jews became marginalized in society, even though Jews worshipped the same God as Christians did. Roman rulers viewed the refusal of the Jewish community to accept Jesus as the Messiah as a threat. They straight up passed laws that discriminated against Jews. In the year 399, a law saying Jews couldn’t marry Christians, in 439, a law saying Jews couldn’t hold positions in government. In 531, a law saying they couldn’t appear as witnesses against Christians in court. Rumors began to spread that Jews had horns and tails, and that they killed Christian children and used their blood for rituals. In the Middle Ages, many societies forced Jews to live in segregated ghettos and wear special clothing. The Catholic Church did not allow Jews to own land, so Jews couldn’t build up wealth through property. However, the Church also didn’t let Christians loan money for profit. Jews could, so they often turned to money lending to build up wealth. Due to the fact that nearly every moneylender happened to be Jewish, this ended up creating a stereotype that Jews were greedy. I mean, people who loan money and charge interest throughout history have rarely been seen in a positive light, amIright? Christian rulers used Jewish money to build extravagant churches and build up armies. By the 11th century, Christianity dominated Europe, and the main minority religion was Judaism. Jews seemed to be the one group Christians could not convert, seen as outsiders. By this time, the Catholic Church was even teaching that Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus. And then, the Black Death. During the 14th century, the bubonic plague spread quickly across Europe, killing around ⅓ of its entire population. Since this was before science, people had no idea what was causing it. Due to superstition and fear, and without any evidence whatsoever, Christians blamed Jews for causing the plague, accusing them of poisoning wells to spread the disease.
