Jaguar i Pace | Why Nobody Is Buying The EV World's Car The Jaguar I-Pace made headlines at the New York International Auto Show by winning the World Car of the Year Award and the organization's awards for Design of the Year and Green Car of the Year. However, the I-Pace isn't winning where it counts: at the dealership. The Jaguar all-electric crossover SUV has sold just 608 units in the U.S. through March plus another 393 late last year. Meanwhile, Tesla has sold an estimated 3,850 Model X crossovers, as tallied by InsideEVs, through the first three months of 2019. Looking at these numbers and the kind of fame these vehicles are getting, buyers are confused about how nobody is buying the electric world car of the year. For its part, Jaguar says the I-Pace is off to a great start. However, the brand admits it is sending vehicles to do their best. "What we've been doing worldwide is allocating the cars to the markets that have the highest command and profitability. So, the greatest opportunity for that at this point in time has been the Scandinavian countries," Dave Larsen, product and launch planning director for Jaguar Land Rover North America, told Green Car Reports. Meanwhile, Jaguar has sold only 200-400 units per month in the U.S., even as the I-Pace earned recognition as the first vehicle from a luxury brand to take on Tesla at its own game. It's been two years since Jaguar Land Rover introduced the I-Pace EV. Despite earning multiple design awards and decent sales in Europe, the electric Jaguar crossover has struggled in the U.S. The company also faced battery-supply issues. Joe Eberhardt, Jaguar Land Rover's North American CEO, wants to use lessons from the I-Pace and apply them to new E.V.s, including the upcoming electric X.J. sedan. But the path forward is not clear. If so, the Jaguar team must be yawning fit to bust, because the I-Pace has picked up more than a few. Sixty two, in fact. Including a trio of World Car Awards. Who knew that there were even that many? And there are excellent reasons for that bulging trophy cabinet. Forget the fact that this is an electric car, because the I-Pace is simply a very good car. It looks cool and modern, but also manages to be unmistakably a Jaguar. Despite the fact that it has a pretty large and heavy battery under its floor, it drives like a Jaguar too. Starting at £60,995, it’s at the more expensive end of electric cars and you’re not going to get that close to its claimed 292-mile range in real use. The Jaguar i-Pace is a pioneering EV premium SUV that points the way to the brand’s all-electric future. As sharp to drive as it is to look at, it’s one of our favourite electric cars. Yet amazingly it’s three years old now, so Jag has treated it to a mid-life facelift. To find out whether these updates are enough for the Jag to remain top of the class, we pitch it against two new rivals from equally established brands - the Audi e-tron Sportback 55 quattro and Mercedes EQC400. There are some new charging modes and updated infotainment, but under the skin the i-Pace remains largely the same, which means it gets two electric motors that deliver 396bhp, a 0-62mph sprint of 4.8 seconds and a claimed range of 292 miles. Prices start at £65,195, but here we test the £69,795 SE with few optional extras. Audi’s e-tron is available as both a sensible SUV and a sleeker coupe-inspired Sportback, as tested here. You can get behind the wheel for £69,850, but our more powerful 402bhp 55 S line costs a hefty £79,185. Fitted with a large 95kWh battery it promises 241 miles between charges and a 5.7 seconds dash from standstill to 62mph. Completing our trio of battery-powered SUVs is the Mercedes EQC400, which starts at £65,720, but weighs in at £74,610 in the AMG-Line Premium Plus tested here. It packs the same 402bhp from its two motors as the Audi, but a lower kerb weight means a just 5.1 seconds is needed for the 0-62mph dash, while you can squeeze a claimed 255 miles out of a single charge.
