Butter Chicken, Rogan Josh, and the all-time favourite - Chicken Tikka Masala! The United Kingdom has embraced curry as its national dish, with tens of thousands of Indian restaurants serving mouth-watering dishes to British taste buds. Staffed over the decades by an influx of migrants from South Asia, these curry houses employ more than 100,000 people. But now this $5bn industry is in freefall. Every week, two Indian restaurants are shutting down as COVID-19, changing consumer tastes, and Brexit take a toll. In this documentary, 101 East correspondent Drew Ambrose travels across the UK to find out why Britain’s curry houses are in crisis. Approximately 87% of Indian restaurants in the UK are run and owned by Bangladeshis. For decades curry houses have been serving dishes such as chicken tikka masala, korma and vindaloo. Those recipes are a big part of British culture but many of these “Indian” restaurants are now struggling as British tastes are evolving and changing. Young British Asian chefs such as, Nitisha Patel and Cynthia Shanmugalingam are fast emerging, providing authentic regional cuisine, such as Gujarati, Punjabi and Sri Lankan food. Filmed by Asian Network's Nalini Sivathasan Additional research by Jai Chayne Series Producer: Anisa Subedar #IndianFood #Curry #BengaliFood We are BBC Stories, a group of journalists making films, long and short, with the younger audience (18-24) in mind. The idea is to tackle issues which concern and impact this group of people. So think about anything from race and identity to mental health, money and much more.

We absolutely love places like this; in this video we point our camera in the direction of the Indian Curries and Indian Bread making sections of the kitchen in which the chefs give us a insight into how they manage to quickly cook up delicious dishes, cooked to order. This is a great Indian kitchen in the heart of London, not only that but also this is the UK's first Vegan Indian Kitchen. You read that right this is a 100% Vegan Kitchen (pure vegetarian) serving up all of the classic curry house dishes but without any form of dairy. Notice how the curry and tandoor oven Chefs' remain so calm and keep their cool under such a fast paced environment. Note that; in Indian restaurants, dishes are cooked on a very high heat which delivers a slight smokiness to the cooked food and gives that distinctive restaurant flavour, taste and character to a dish which cannot be replicated in the normal home kitchen. Hungry Beast is one of our favourite places if we feel like eating an Indian Curry Takeaway meal; we find that the food does not fail to deliver on the taste factor plus the portion size of the food served up is very generous, they serve up restaurant quality food at Indian Street Food prices. The guys at "Hungry Beast" are "Alchemists of Indian Vegan cooking, the following are just some of the curry dishes served up here: * Vegan Chicken Bhuna * Vegetable Jalfrezi * Mushroom Bhaji * Chana Masala * Saag Aloo * Garlic Chilli Chicken * Vegan Garlic Chilli Prawns * Black Dal Makhani * Mixed Vegetable Bhaji * Special Fried Rice * Vegan Chicken (Murgh) Makhani * Tarka Daal * Tandoori Oven Vegan Butter Garlic Naan * Vegan Meat Samosa * Vegan Sheek Kebab There are many more items on the menu which we didn't get to check out this time around......but this gives us even more of a reason to pay a return visit ASAP........wink, wink ;-) Some Indian recipe books that you may perhaps like: * SpiceBox: 100 curry house favourites made vegan: 🤍 * Zaika: Vegan recipes from India: 🤍 * Vegan Richa's Indian Kitchen: Traditional and Creative Recipes: 🤍 * Veganbell's Indian Vegan Cookbook: 90 Easy, Plant-Based Recipes from India: 🤍 * Instant Pot Vegan Indian Cookbook: 80 Quick and Easy Plant-Based Favorites: 🤍 * Vegan: The Essential Indian Cookbook for Vegans: 🤍 * Vegan Bites of India: 150 Spicy Vegan Snack, Appetizer and Street Food Recipes from India! On our annual "Foodie Pilgrimage" to the yearly Leicester Mela; seeing the "The Royal Indian" team always feels like seeing a dear member of our family (Indian Street Food family that is). The barbecued sweetcorn cobs recipe was very simple: once the corn cobs were grilled, a wedge of lemon was dipped in salt & cayenne chilli powder and rubbed into the corn, also a generous knob of butter made it complete. Because the sweet corn cobs were grilled on real charcoal; they had a wonderful smoky barbecue flavour. As well as the freshly made wok stir fried Indo-Chinese classic of Chilli Paneer they were also serving up freshly prepared Spicy Vegetable Hakka Noodles and veg Manchurian. This was the day that the "The Royal Indian Restaurant" bought a "Little Taste of India" to the visitors who were at the Leicester Mela / Festival. Instead of sitting at home and watching TV, this is one of the reasons we go onto the streets - it's in the eager anticipation and hope that we may just perhaps come across street food masters like this. Kebab Mahal in Edinburgh, Scotland, has been a favourite of mine since being introduced to it by Indian and Pakistani mates as a lad! Not only do they specialise in Tandoori Indian food, they're only two-time national takeaway champions... so, you don't take my word for it that the Indian food there is some of the best in the UK. In this video, me and the good lady ordered the house speciality - A mixed Tandoori grill, with chicken and shish kebab - as well as a delicious, creamy chickpea chana masala, and the star of the show for me - fragrant okra with caramelised onions and tomato. If ever you're in Edinburgh, Scotland, and fancy wrapping your chops around some of the finest Tandoori treats in town, Kebab Mahal (it's well known as a takeaway, but I normally eat right there in their little dining room) is the spot for you. 🤍 Also, at the end of this video, we stopped by a quality Indian cafe called '10 to 10 in Delhi'. They also prepare tasty curries, but I generally come in for a pot of the awesome 'masala chai'. 🤍 If you enjoyed this video, why not check out my other Edinburgh food videos here: 🤍 You can also see all my travel guides and vlogs to Edinburgh here: 🤍 #Tandoori #IndianFood #Edinburgh

This year the Leicester Mela (Festival) finally returns on Sunday 21st August 2022. Due to the pandemic the Indian themed Leicester Mela did not take place for 3 years (the last Leicester Mela took place on Sunday 18th August 2019) it would be an understatement to say that we dearly missed it; this year we will definately be there. The Leicester Mela is a free event, there is nothing to book, just turn up and enjoy the food, the music and the "Desi" atmosphere. The opening times for the Leicester Mela are from: 11:00am to 6:00pm With the current Indian heatwave summer that the UK is currently experiencing, it seems more than appropriate that the Leicester Mela returns offering "A Little Taste of India" in the UK This video is a just a little "taster" of what to expect at the Leicester Mela. We have to say that this is Desi Indian Street Food at it's very best. This is one of the reasons we go onto the streets - it's in the eager anticipation and hope that we'll perhaps come across Indian street food masters like this. Prakash Caterers menu has been inspired by some of India's favourite and most famous of Street Food Stalls. As well as the freshly made Indo-Chinese classic of Chilli Paneer they were also serving up the following Indian street treats: * Gujarati Samosas This stall truly reminded of the times that we used to eat the same (or similar) in Navsari Town, Bardoli Town and Surat City in Gujarat, India. This was the day that "Prakash Catering" bought a "Little Taste of India" to the good people of Leicester who were visiting the Leicester Mela Festival. Russians try Indian food for the the first time in Moscow, Russia. With the temperature at -15'c we headed to Arbat Street to warm up a little at "Curry" Indian restaurant to introduce Julia's brother and sister to Indian food (it was also a good excuse for us to eat one of our favourite cuisine's). We ordered 3 currys: Paneer Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken and a Dal Makhani, as well as, basmati rice and a butter naan. - Support our channel HERE 😊 - 🤍 🤍 - Our Travel Gear - 🤍 - We get all of our music for our vlogs from Epidemic Sound - 30 DAYS FREE HERE - 🤍 - We make all of our thumbnails HERE - 🤍 - For business enquiries - business🤍mattandjulia.co.uk You can also, find us here: WEBSITE: 🤍 INSTAGRAM: 🤍 PATREON: 🤍 BUYMEACOFFEE: 🤍 TIKTOK: 🤍 YOUTUBE: 🤍 TWITTER: 🤍 🎵 Music: All the music in this video comes from here: 🤍 #indian #indianfood #food #foodvlog #travel #travelvlog #india #russia

Forty years ago, a ground-breaking cookery programme popularised the cooking of Indian food at home. In fact, it proved so popular in the UK, US and Europe, supermarkets ran out of the ingredients featured on the show. It was presented by the Indian actor turned food writer Madhur Jaffrey. ‘Madhur Jaffrey’s Indian Cookery’ was the first mainstream series about Indian food broadcast in the UK and the first to be presented by an Indian.
