Making a Connection is the latest video in our ILFORD Inspires series and features Sheffield born fashion and portrait photographer Craig Fleming. Armed with his Mamiya RZ67, his go-to medium format camera, we joined Craig to shoot some black and white film studio portraits in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Known for his quirky portraits and up close style, this video takes us behind the scenes of a film photography portrait shoot gives us an insight into how Craig chooses which film to shoot and how he goes about 'making a connection' with models and actors to capture the shot. In the fourth and final episode of ILFORD Inspires New York Silver Stories, we explore two community darkrooms in New York City: Bushwick Community Darkroom and Gowanus Darkroom. Community darkrooms are important to local film photographers and darkroom printers. They allow those who don't normally have access to film processing and darkroom printing facilities to create their work, as well as learn, collaborate and evolve with other like minded people. Ilford. It's a town on the rise. As far as the crime rate goes, anyway. Ilford was once an oasis in the crime desert of London's East, where the streets were leafy and clean; the High Road was bustling, the crime was low, and the ambitions were high. Fast forward to 2023. Ilford is one of the most dangerous and violent towns in Greater London, with several murders occuring every year; some are even double and triple murders. As the body count mounts, the wind of change blows over Ilford's disjointed and disfigured skyline, with the council seeking to regenerate the area and attract a new type of Ilfordian. One who is in many ways, similar to the Ilfordian of old. But who is going to want to live in a town with the lawlessness and social issues that Ilford has? In this long awaited episode of LondonUncovered, we visit Ilford to explore the town for ourselves. We look at Ilford's history; the good, and the bad, and attempt to explain just how Ilford ended up the way it has - and how it might look in the future. * I actually found this video very enjoyable to make. It was nice to vlog another area and look at wider issues and more casual/everyday stuff rather than just crime. I also felt maybe I was slightly too harsh on Ilford. As I got further out of the town centre, it did become nicer, like around Gants Hill. However on the whole, I still maintain it's a dive of a place for lack of a better word, perhaps not as bad as Barking but pretty close. The green spaces at Valentines, the close proximity to nicer places like Wanstead/Epping Forest, along with the better town centre and transport connections means it has an edge over Barking.

In this video, I share my thoughts on Ilford Delta 3200: the world's fastest black and white film. I didn't get the best results from this 35mm film stock, and many of the photos turned out fairly sub-par, but I am overcoming my pride to share them with you anyways. Overall, I think the combination of black and white + very low light makes it difficult to parse what is in each photograph. On top of that, the graininess of this film obscures a fair bit of the detail that is otherwise available. It seems like photos taken on this film would have to have great contrast between areas of light and dark, and relatively simple subject matter with very little distraction happening in the frame. Otherwise, the film grain and lack of contrast between tones of shadows seem to muddy the resulting images quite a bit. I go over some examples from the roll I shot that highlight these issues, and also share my findings on what works and what doesn't. As a bonus, there's a fun lesson about the chemistry of film photography in this video as well. instagram 📸: 🤍 In this morethanyoucaretosee episode, I dip my toe into, learning how to shoot ilford HP5 black and white photography. This was my first time shooting this film. For whatever reason, I’ve anyways been a little nervous to shoot black and white. I’m not always sure I’m going to get the results I want. And I respect a lot of talented photographers like Fan Ho who shot black and white. There so much to learn about being able to control the tones of the image, using colored filters, pushing and pulling your film. This really put me out of my comfort zone, I just feel so much more comfortable with color films such as Kodak’s Portra 400. The first roll i shot at box speed, and my second roll I pushed one stop. NOTE: Not all these shots were taken chronologically. I mixed it up with some portraits and landscapes. I also talk about knowing your rights as a photographer and the importance of knowing the rights to your photos. Note: each state or country may have different laws. So know your rights. I developed the Ilford film at home with Cinestill’s DF96 single step developer and fix. Super easy and would recommend it if you are wanting to just start with black and white photography. I scanned my negatives with my Epson V650 and converted my negatives with Negative Lab Pro in Lightroom. This week I plan to keep shooting some Ilford Film such as Ilford XP2 400 Ilford Delta 3200 and Ilford PANF Plus 50
