Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi, who caused controversy by competing in an international contest without a headscarf, returned to Iran on Wednesday to a heroine's welcome by cheering supporters. Footage had shown Rekabi, 33, scaling a wall without her head covered while competing in South Korea while representing Iran, which has been swept by protests ignited by Mahsa Amini's death in morality police custody. In comments to state TV upon her arrival in Tehran, Rekabi said she had returned in "full health" and apologized to "the people of Iran for the turbulence and worry that I created," her head covered by a baseball cap and a hood as she spoke. BBC Persian had reported on Tuesday that friends had been unable to contact her, and there were fears for her safety. Iran’s embassy in South Korea, on Twitter, denied reports about her going missing after the competition. Twelve students of Mangalore University, in Karnataka's Manguluru, on Saturday, May 28, were allegedly prevented from entering their classrooms for wearing hijabs. The principal, Anasuya Rai, tried to convince the girls to remove their hijabs inside the ladies’ room and then enter the classrooms, but the students insisted on keeping the hijabs on. The children then went to the library. However, they were denied entry there as well and they had to return home. On Friday, the college development committee decided not to allow students to wear hijabs inside the classes or the library. “Students can wear the hijab and come on the campus but they will have to remove the headscarf before entering classrooms or the library,” said vice-chancellor Subramanya Yadapadithaya. The controversy over the hijab in Karnataka began on January 1, 2022, when six Muslim students of Udupi Women's Pre-University college tried to attend classes wearing hijab. They were denied entry to college for wearing hijabs. A college in Karnataka has banned girls from wearing Hijab. Girls were denied entry to the college if they had the 'Head Scarf' on. When asked about this to the college principal he said, the rule is made to ensure uniformity amongst the student. The controversy over Hijab in Karnataka has intensified, after Muslim girl students of the state Pre-University College were yet again not allowed to enter the college premises. The video of the students being stopped by the college principal at the gate has now gone viral. The girl students can be heard telling the guards that their exams are just two months away, and why is the college creating an issue on wearing the hijab now. Until now, the norm in the state was that students were allowed to wear the hijab in college, but they would remove it inside the classroom. Back in December last year, 6 Muslim girl students faced a similar problem in the college. An identity war has now erupted after male students of the college sported saffron shawls to challenge the Hijab. The Karnataka Education Minister has assured that a committee is looking into the matter. “We didn't want the education institution to become the war field of two communities. It's a sacred place and every student should feel equal. We took a clear stand that this should not be done at the premises of the institutions,” said BC Nagesh. Massive protests broke out in Iran after the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini. Amini died in hospital on Friday, three days after she was arrested and allegedly beaten by the so-called 'morality police.
