Hello EarthQuakers, we are back with a deep dive into our latest pedal, the Sunn O))) Life Pedal V3. The Sunn O))) Life Pedal is a distortion with a blendable analog octave up and a booster combined in one compact package. This circuit has been meticulously tweaked from the original to squeeze every last drop of heavy crushing tone available. The octave section has been fine-tuned to make it more pronounced without losing the bottom end and we added a third footswitch, utilizing Flexi-Switch Technologyimage001.png, for the octave to allow an additional method of quick and radical tone shaping. We are excited to have this back in permanent production; it is a true labor of love. The “Amplitude” side is faithfully modeled after the classic “White Face” distortion unit, using modern, reliable components to last a lifetime. The Sunn O))) Life Pedal introduces two additional clipping options to better adapt to different rigs. The first position is no diodes to allow for full, grinding OpAmp assault at maximum volume. The second position utilizes two silicon diodes and one LED in an asymmetrical clipping configuration. This delivers a slightly compressed and smooth crunch, similar to a valve amplifier. The last position is the stock double silicon diode configuration which provides that classic Rat influenced tone you know and love. The Octave in the Sunn O))) Life Pedal is an all-discrete, analog full-wave rectifier based on a classic vintage design. Located at the input of the circuit, the Octave control slowly blends in the octave effects as you turn it clockwise. This feature can also be used via expression control allowing for wild, hands-free octave swells mid-riff. Because this is an analog octave effect, it is monophonic and works best playing single notes above the twelfth fret while using the neck pickup. The “Magnitude” section of the Sunn O))) Life Pedal is a simple all-discrete MOSFET booster designed to blast your preamp tubes and drive them wild. It is a 100% clean, no-nonsense, high-impedance booster that adds very little color to your tone. It does not add distortion on its own but has plenty of output to push your amp into saturation. The signal path goes Octave-Distortion-Boost. The booster can be used independently of the octave and distortion circuit with its own respective footswitch. The Petrine Cross is the octave distortion and the Christian Cross is the booster. Chasms are cleared, mountains sheared, glaciers calved, novæ birthed. Vintage valve amplifiers recommended. We hope you transcend. Designed and manufactured by EarthQuaker Devices in the dark corridors of Akron, Ohio. Learn more: 🤍 Subscribe to PG's Channel: 🤍 The doom device's third iteration includes a thorough circuit tweak designed to capture the band's shattering, front-end saturation felt throughout 2019's Life Metal. Sunn O))) are pleased to present an enhanced version of the Sunn O))) Life Pedal Octave Distortion + Booster, in collaboration with their comrades at EarthQuaker Devices. The Sunn O))) Life Pedal circuit has been meticulously tweaked from the original to squeeze every last drop of heavy crushing tone available. The octave section has been fine tuned to make it more pronounced without losing the bottom end and we added a third footswitch, utilizing Flexi-Switch Technology®, for the octave to allow an additional method of quick and radical tone shaping. “I’m super stoked to have this pedal back in our line!” says EarthQuaker founder, president and designer Jamie Stillman. “We put in a lot of hours dialing this one in and I’m very proud of the final product. Sunn O))) is such an iconic band and I’m thrilled to be part of their legacy.” EarthQuaker CEO Julie Robbins agrees.“It has been an honor and privilege to collaborate with Greg and Stephen on the SUNN O))) Life Pedal. We are so excited to give this special pedal a permanent place in our line.” In the writing sessions for Life Metal, Stephen & Greg worked extensively shearing their tones toward a broader energy spectrum over high powered saturation and across planes of sonic character, with the ambition to take full advantage of recording engineer Steve Albini’s exacting capture skills. The results are astounding: there is breadth and luminosity of colour, vast sonic cosmoses, flashes of abstract colour (synthetic and objective) through resulting themes which emerged from the mastered depths of saturation and circuits between the two players and their mountains of gear. “We set out to create something that was unique and had its own distinct character to it. The result combines different distortions and achieves different shades of saturation that we were actually doing in the studio,” says Greg Anderson. “I’m extremely happy with this pedal. It’s an integral part of my tone and it holds an important place in my pedal chain.” “Working on this new version has been a great continuity of this collaboration which feels so right, and sounds so right,” says Stephen O’Malley. “It’s a really beautiful pedal and it’s also a beautiful art collaboration. I think we made something really interesting that people can enjoy to use for their own music, but also, it makes a lot of sense to release a piece of distortion as a release for our band. We’re really happy that this is a trilogy now.” The Sunn O))) Life Pedal is designed to represent the core front end chain used in those sessions, to drive the tubes of the band’s multiple vintage Sunn O))) Model T amplifiers (or take your fancy) into overload ecstasy. This is a 100w tube amp full stack’s holy dream, or its apostate nightmare. An octave fuzz inspired by the Shin-Ei FY2 & FY6 units leads the circuit into a brutal big box rodent inspired distortion, recreated with the best components, and including a three-way clipping switch (opAmp, Asymmetric & Symmetric). Second stage is a purely clean boost to further overdrive the preamp tubes of your vintage system into -scaped harmonics, and feedback overtone bliss. Board To Death Ep. 39 - Wata (Boris) | EarthQuaker Devices

24.03.2022

We're back with another edition of Board To Death! This one's special because we take you on a journey through the pedalboard of none other than Wata of our favorite Japanese heavy experimental trio Boris. True pedal nerds should get a kick out of this one because Wata's board has an interesting configuration and a few EQD treats! Wata kindly takes through her signal chain, which includes two wah pedals, one for traditional Wah tricks and another for when she wants to get really weird. Her EQD pedals include the Aqueduct vibrato (in pitch bend mode), the Avalanche Run stereo reverb and delay, the Hummingbird tremolo, and naturally, the Wata/EQD collaboration the Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainar, which replaces the original 1970s ELK BM Sustainar she has used for years. "The reason why I have Hizumitas on my board now is, I've been using Elk's Big Muff copy for a long time. It keeps breaking when I take it out for a tour. It's broken down many times, and I've had it repaired many times. So I've wanted pedals that don't break down and something compact that can fit on my board," Wata said, noting that her bandmate, guitarist/bassist Takeshi has been using EQD pedals for some time. "We've visited the HQ in Akron when we were on tour, and we've done a tour together (with EQD band Relaxer) in Japan too. We've been super close, and they told me that they could make a clone of my Elk BM that is compact that I always wanted, and this became the one. I added it on the board as the main dirt that I use," she said. Wata also shows us how she stacks her DS1 with the Hizumitas and gives a taste of the main riff of the Boris tune "Pink." For free! Wata uses several different fuzz pedals in addition to the Hizumitas in various combinations, including the Dwarfcraft Shiva, the Mattoverse Air Trash, and the MASF Watafuzz depending on the needs of a particular song. Boris has 30 years of songs, so that's a lot of choices to be made. For wilder sounds, Wata has the MASF Possessed, the Electro-Harmonix Freeze sound retainer, and the Bananana Mandala. Wata also takes an actual Roland Tape Echo out on the road with her because she has yet to find a pedal version that gives her the level of control she desires. Wata also reveals her custom switcher made by Soul Power Instruments with a unique setup allowing her to easily switch between combinations of her many onstage amps or use individually or in any configuration rather than serially. Wata is a fascinating guitar sorceress, and fans (including us) seldom get to hear her speak on her methods and gear. So please, relish this opportunity to spend some quality time with Wata, her pedalboard, her black Les Paul Custom and her amps! Want to know more about WATA? Of course you do! Hello EarthQuakers, Welcome to the new "EarthQuaker Sessions" YouTube Channel. Here you'll find all your favorite EQD Sessions and perhaps a few you may have missed. Enjoy this special treat from our awesome friends and collaborators in Boris, who are celebrating their 30th Anniversary in 2022! "Loveless" is from the trio's heavy-as-heck 2020 album "NO." For fans of the Japanese heavy experimental legends, this session should give you the full Boris injection you need to get through your day. There's headbang-inducing speedy punk-metal riffage and a satisfying doom crawl. Drummer Atsuo commands the microphone with his clean(ish) vocals, while double guitar/bass master Takeshi provides the very unclean vocals and big bottom end while guest drummer Muchio provides the rhythmic propusion. And, of course, six-string sorceress Wata wields her Black LP custom, fueled by her Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainar flinging riffs and leads around the room to ensure it's all frickin' epic. This EQD session is the seven-minute sonic summation of the trio's credo: BorisHeavyRocks. Justin & Jamie look at very rare and unique EQD Overdrive

Hello Pedal lovers! We're back with another episode of This Old Bench with your bearded and aproned host EQD builder Justin Seeker. In this trip to the basement, Justin welcomes back EQD founder, President, and Lead Designer Jamie Stillman to talk about an extremely rare pedal from his personal collection, The Royal Drive. Enjoy the relaxed banter as Jamie and Justin highlight the pedal's unique hammered spray-paint coating, "hand sprayed in a garage, no mask. Which probably explains a lot," Jamie surmises about his early days as a pedal maker. The Royal Drive is one of Jamie's favorites, and he and Justin ponder why it never made it to full production in the EarthQuaker Devices line. Then listen closely as the pair open it up to reveal the Royal Drive's DIY, veroboard guts. Jamie whips out a Jazzmaster and jams a bit as we listen and learn about the Royal Drive's interesting internal dipswitch setup. The dipswitch allows the lucky Royal Drive owner (of which there are fewer than 10) to try out various combinations of LED, Mosfet, silicon, and asymmetrical diodes to sculpt their signature overdrive tone. "I'm really happy with this pedal," Jamie says. We hope you are happy with this fun look at one of EQD's early and most rare pedals, straight outta the basement. Hello EarthQuakers, We are back with a deep dive into our latest pedal, the Special Cranker, an all-discrete analog distortion enhancement device. Some pedal lovers out there may wonder why anyone would need a manual for an overdrive. "Aren't all overdrives essentially "Turn it up to make sound louder!" Well, Special Cranker isn't just any old overdrive. Instead, it's a versatile stompbox that works to boost and enhance your instrument's signal with a bit of grit while not obliterating your amp's natural tone. A unique feature is the diode selector switch allowing you to choose between the softer and rounder germanium or the brighter and edgier silicon tone. In either mode, you'll get an enhanced version of your signature tone that you can control. The Special Cranker is a medium-gain drive designed not to dominate your sound. Instead, it acts as a sonic tool in your pedal arsenal, offering more options for tone sculpting. Also, it can flat-out rock. So, please nod your head approvingly as we walk you through a few ways you can use the Special Cranker to augment and refine your already killer tone on any instrument. EarthQuaker Devices Black Ash Endangered Fuzz

07.11.2018

Limited to 1500 units worldwide, The Black Ash is a fuzz/overdrive that takes some cues from the vintage 3-knob Tone Bender. It uses a highly curated cache of rare and irreplaceable components including paper-in-oil capacitors and NOS half-watt carbon composition resistors from Jamie Stillman’s personal stash to light a fire under this classic fuzz/drive with an explosive-yet-detailed treble response, a sturdy midrange, and subterranean bass extension. The three controls on the surface of the Black Ash are for Level, Fuzz, and Top. Level sets the output volume with unity gain around 10 o’clock. Fuzz adjusts the amount of gain from cooled-off amp-like breakup at lower levels to scorching fuzz tones when cranked. The control labeled Top works on frequencies between 2kHz and 10kHz to adjust how “forward” the guitar sits in the mix and helps pair the Black Ash with different pickup types. At lower Top settings, Black Ash takes on an organic, woody character that blankets the signal in warmth like an ol’ Kentucky hug. As the Top is increased, new harmonics appear, and the Black Ash gives a stiffer response with a sharper attack that can make humbuckers chime and will make single-coils glisten like pearly dewdrops in the morning sun. We find the Top control to be most pronounced when used at lower Level and Fuzz settings with low-to-mid-output pickups and a reasonably clean or edge-of-breakup amplifier. Each Black Ash is built one-at-a-time, the hard way, by hand by amateur dendrologists in the arboretum of Akron, Ohio, USA. Buy Now: 🤍 Welcome back to ProGuitarShop.com, today we've loaded up the Acapulco Gold, direct from Earthquaker Devices. The Acapulco Gold is an original IC-based one knob dirt box, based on a cranked Sunn Model T amplifier. The Acapulco Gold is capable of audience-pummeling doom tones with its power amp distortion as well as soaring leads and everything in between. The pedal contains one knob, volume, which means that the guitar's volume knob works as an input saturator for a touch-sensitive dirt pedal that's expressive without being overly complicated. When rolling back the volume knob on your guitar, the Acapulco gold cleans up well and gives a great old school tone. When the guitar's volume knob is rolled back just a bit, the Acapulco Gold transforms into a thick, gritty overdrive. However, when guitars pickups and pedal's volume are cranked, the Acapulco Gold can transform even the most mild mannered Telecaster into an antimatter-spitting doom machine. Like all Earthquaker pedals, the Acapulco Gold features only the finest components available and is hand-made one at a time in the all-inclusive resort of Akron Ohio.

Where there only used to be a gain control labelled MORE, there’s now been added a Tone and Level control to the mix, as well as a toggle that lets you switch between Germanium or Silicon clipping diodes, allowing you to shape anything from mild edge-of-break-up boosts to thick and ragged crunch tones. The collaboration between EarthQuaker Devices and Sunn O))) began with the extremely limited, highly sought-after original Sunn O))) Life Pedal. Due to the overwhelming response, a larger run of a second, pedalboard-friendly version was created. Still not enough to satiate the masses, the third iteration has just been unleashed. Retaining the tonal characteristics of the original, the compact design of the second edition, while adding a third footswitch for greater control over the analog octave up; the new third version joins the permanent EQD lineup and is available now at dealers worldwide. Hey EarthQuakers, are you wondering what all the fuss (not fuzz) is about the new EQD Special Cranker? Well, hit play on the above video and let Arianna Powell, guitarist for singer Olivia Rodrigo and solo artist school you on why she likes our new trustworthy overdrive. Arianna knows a lot of cool chords, and as always, her tasteful playing highlights the Special Cranker’s ability to maintain note and chord clarity at low or medium gain settings. Then, using an Avalanche Run for a bit of depth, Arianna shows the benefits of both the silicon and geranium modes and touts the warmth and genuine “amp break-up” sound you can get from this pedal. So, absorb the excellent playing and then go to your nearest online or brick-and-mortar EQD dealer to get a Special Cranker for your pedalboard. EarthQuaker Devices Retrospective Ep. 4 - Afterneath Enhanced Otherworldly Reverberator

At EarthQuaker Devices, we prefer to look forward when it comes to our pedals. But sometimes, we have to take a moment to acknowledge how much our past has enriched our present. This Afterneath Retrospective film is a labor of love that we offer to all pedalheads perusing the YouTubeverse, especially our loyal EQD fans. The Afterneath is EQD's "Enhanced Otherworldly Reverberator," which is a fancy way of saying it's a really cool, weird, and unique reverb pedal! When it was released in 2014, thousands of reverb variants were already present on the pedal market. But as you will hear from the many artists, producers, and musicians in this retrospective, none of those quality pedals have been able to give creative folks what the Afterneath offers. Learn about the "happy accident" EQD lead designer Jamie Stillman discovered while messing around with some code that started out labeled as simply "Big Reverb" before eventually being expanded and refined into our beloved Afterneath. Hear reminiscences from longtime EQD employees about how the popularity of the Afterneath helped raise EarthQuaker's profile and burnish our reputation for creating unique pedals in the industry and among players. Meet EQD artist Matt Horak (whose talents we share with Marvel Comics and other publications), the man behind the iconic wizard and cave graphic that serves as a perfect visual encapsulation of the sonic qualities of the Afterneath. And, with the latest V3, featuring the mode knob and a CV/expression pedal jack, there are even more sonic possibilities for folks to explore. You can dive directly into some cavernous reverberating chaos or make a relaxing sonic bed of gently undulating waves of notes, chords and sounds or any and all points in between. We've also gathered an array of artists, producers, and sound sculptors, including Nels Cline, Arianna Powell, Robin Finck, Yvette Young of Covet, The Pedal Zone's Stefan Fast, producers Dave Pensado and Joe Barresi, adventurous harpist Lara Somogyi and others to talk about their love of the Afterneath pedal and its Eurorack counterpart and demonstrate how it gets their creative juices flowing. Oh, and we also got a real Wizard! Though we're a humble cluster of hardworking sentient bipeds at EQDHQ, we are pretty darn proud of this mysterious and versatile little reverb box. The Afterneath has been embraced by musicians and creatives of all genres and players of all instruments. Throughout its eight years and two upgrades, the Afterneath is still sending music makers down new musical paths for exploration, and that is as inspiring to us as the Afterneath has been to others. As our good buddy Robin Finck, longtime guitarist for Nine Inch Nails, succinctly said. "EarthQuaker Devices and reverb..what could be bad about that? Add to that your best cave of forgotten dreams graphic, and we all win." 0:02:40 - Chapter One: The Happy Accident 0:10:38 - Chapter Two: Growing Pains 0:22:40 - Chapter Three: Just a Wizard in a Cave 0:40:40 - Chapter Four: Studio Wizardry 0:49:58 - Chapter Five: The Most Magical Time of Year 0:54:55 - Chapter Six: Same Wizard, New Tricks 1:00:21 - Chapter Seven: The Wizards of Synth 1:06:41 - Chapter Eight: The Adventure Into Modular Synth 1:17:18 - Epilogue 1:18:04 - Credits Directed by Chris Tran Edited by Chris Tran Shot by Chris Tran, Vice Cooler, Jeffrey France, David Whited, Dannesh Moosa, Dalton Blanco, Adonay Rivera Gallardo Audio Engineers Jeff France, Scott Cornish Music Provided by Cory Juba "Flexi Swirl Cory Juba "Blooming Major Reverb" Cory Juba "Fluttery Sequence" Lisa Bella Donna "One for Juan" Lisa Bella Donna "Stereo Doorbell" 🤍 Additional music provided by Incompetech.com Visit our site: 🤍 Follow us on Instagram: 🤍 Like us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍
