Cinema RAW Light, the Canon-developed compact RAW file format is not only fast and easy to use but also allows creatives to achieve results that are simply not possible with other codecs. Advertising filmmaker Brett Danton and colour grading expert Ollie Kenchington discuss how to get to grips with Canon's Cinema Raw Light and the advantages it brings on shoots. "RAW scares a lot of people because they think it's hard to handle, but it's not," says Brett Danton. Ollie Kenchington, who runs an award-winning corporate film production agency adds "Cinema RAW Light is a fantastic codec to work with: lots and lots of data, but lightweight enough to edit with a laptop." Quick & dirty test with the limited time I had with my friend's R5! Would love to hear your thoughts Since cameras are getting more similar each day in terms of image quality, I like to see where each camera breaks, how the sensor & codecs perform, so bear that in mind with these extremely under exposed shots lol Also I made no attempt to color match these, simply left them at their default color gamma settings (Cinema Gamut on the R5, Blackmagic Design Color Space on the Pocket 6K) Both cameras are amazing and the 12-bit codec is visibly better than the 10-bit h.265 in terms of color information & overall tone mapping etc. Also 8K is not as awful as I had originally thought (my 9 year old 3rd gen i7 & GTX 960 is obviously struggling but hey, Premiere didn't even crash which is awesome! No smooth playback for my setup, of course....) If you do the math the data rate of 8K RAW on the R5 (325 MB/s) is close to shooting 6K BRAW 3:1 on the Pocket (323 MB/s as per the Blackmagic website), so since 8K has about 2.6x more pixels/data (correct me if I'm wrong) I imagine this 8K RAW, as massive as it is, is still compressed at around 4:1 or even 5:1 (it even imports as Canon C200 Cinema Raw Light which is interesting) The good news is they now added 8K RAW Light which is about 170 MB/s when shooting 24p, closer to 8K BRAW 8:1 on the new UMP 12k or like shooting 8K 8:1 redcode on the Red Monstro! So big ups to Canon for that! Full disclosure, even with the 1.1 firmware, although I was just shooting short 20 second clips in each setting, the camera overheated after about 45 minutes being on (which goes to show the overheating timer doesn't depend solely on recording continuously), which is a massive bummer. Otherwise a very solid camera that can achieve images worthy of high end cinema production, if only it had active cooling to get past the heat....fingers crossed for the rumored R5c with active cooling like the FX3 & S1H!

SOLVED MY ISSUE!!! WATCH THIS NEW VIDEO: 🤍 Original Issue: I just got the Canon EOS R5 C. Editing 8K Canon RAW Light in the new version of Premiere without proxies was not really possible. BUT the older version of Premiere has insanely better performance with real-time playback of 8K RAW footage from my new R5 C! I show examples of it here alongside RED's RAW R3D 6k files. Then I discovered another weird thing about Canon's 6k Raw Light. Important information for any Premiere Pro editors working with Canon RAW Light. The best program to edit RAW files is Capture One. The best way to process RAW is really about what suits your workflow and style most. I used to use Canon EOS 5D Mark II, then III, and now using mostly 5D Mark IV and sometimes Canon 1DX Mark II, but that is usually when I shoot events or videos that requires 4K 60 frame videos. Other than Canon's native program DPP, I find Capture One to be the best way to process my Canon RAW files. Processing RAW files can be daunting, but RAW files offer so much, any photographers should shoot with RAW files no matter how small a shoot it. Editing RAW files can be made a fun creative process when we choose a program that is intuitive and best fit our brain's workflow. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Raw, Adobe Lightroom are the popular choices and there are way more resources to learn them than any other options because they are the best built ones, and developed by a creative giant. I struggled a lot using Lightroom and and mainly Adobe's way to interpret and editing RAW files. That was a huge reason why I stopped doing photography for a long time. Now I have seen people doing amazing work with Lightroom, but for some reason, it doesn't edit the file the way it suits me, both logistically and creatively. When I started shooting with Canon 5D Mark ii and iii again, I learnt about Capture One from any creatives, it was rarely taught because it was a very unstable program. It crashed too often. It was too frustrating to be used. But since their V7, it has been stabilised and it performs so well that many photographers start using it to tether shooting (connecting your camera to the computer so the images automatically load into your computer instead of your card). When I learnt about Capture One from photographers and retouchers whose styles (both their work and personalities!) inspire me, I gave it a try, the price is steep. It is 299USD to buy and they have a new version coming out every year, which means another 99USD to upgrade (you don't have to) every year. I would suggest the monthly subscription option which is 15USD a month. You really only start saving a little in year 3 of the subscription and it's easier payment if you are not sure if you will really like it. If you are SONY user, it is only 50EURO/USD to buy it, no subscription plan. It's so weird, because it is both 50, doesn't matter if you check out with EURO or USD, so check out with USD, 50Euro is more expensive than 50USD. Capture One is a great way to process RAW files because it interprets RAW files with very different process than Lightroom. While the look of the two applications look similar, and all the dials and adjustments are almost the same, the whole feel and touch of what they do are so different. One time I woke up in the middle of the night after I did a tutorial on both programs, I looked at an image I have been working on and was shocked how grey it looks, after panicking for 10 mins I realised I was looking at it on Lightroom. Some may say Lightroom stay true to the RAW characters, giving you this grey flat look, while Capture One jerks up the saturation. I would disagree with it. The "jerking up the saturation" process is automatic, so often time the interpretations will not be accurate, surely some images will look off. However, that is not my experience with Capture One. The RAW files only look exactly like how I saw it when I was shooting, I am very sensitive to colours and I can remember tones and shades (even tho they are all a spectrum and relative) What I am most impressed is the way the programme interpret light, the highlight and the shades are what give our images texture and depth, while it doesn't "saturate" like JPG, it offers amazing interpretation of each image, making it much easier to visualise and imagine how you want your image to turn out. The other huge reason I love it is that I love my images just a little bit exaggerated, I play around with colours and shades. With Lightroom, the images can quickly look like they have too much MSG in the cooking process, or another way to put it, it looks like someone has plastic surgery way too much to stand out in a very wrong way. Those who argue Lightroom offers more authentic interpretation to the RAW files say you can achieve the same when you put the time to edit the image. So I need to spend the time just to achieve what Capture One can offer right away? I find Capture One a much better time saving program. I couldn't use to do events because I would poke my eyes out using Lightroom. It took such a long time to process the image the way I want and often time losing details in both dark and highlight, making it looking like they have too much MSG. Capture One made the whole culling, editing, and exporting a much faster process. I can now offer services to events and also offer an add on speed processing service for those who would like to see the images in 24hrs.

Max Resolution for fluid recording stays 960x540. Highest possible Resolution stays 1562x866. But recording is only possible for approximately 120 Frames till the first Frame Drops. You can stil see the Moire and the "Pinky Frames". Where the Firmware still drops 2-3 Frames per record that have a pinkish tint in it. Don't know why yet.

Shot with 5D Mk3 at 720🤍25p with Magic Lantern RAW video module Processed by Adobe Camera RAW I was mostly interested in how things work for high-contrast situations, hence the choice of shots. And it worked great. Dark shots have ISOs of 3200, others 200, 400 or 800. There are quirks, i.e. roughly 4 frames are corrupt (not a huge deal, I've just cut them out), some frames are dropped during capture (barely noticeable), lens corrections from ACR jump suddenly on zoom (probably shouldn't use it for multiple DNGs, especially when zooming). In general, the picture is somewhat soft and noisy, and still not as good as with some big ass cameras (i.e. Red). Music by Röyksopp.
