Since big Western brands like McDonald’s pulled out of Russia, an array of copycat companies have replaced them. Instead of Starbucks, IKEA and Dunkin’ - Russia now has Stars Coffee, Swed House and Donutto. McDonald’s is now Vkusno I Tochka. CoolCola, Fancy and Sprint have replaced Coke, Fanta and Sprite. So how do Russians feel about these look-alike newcomers? How are these companies able to copy the brands they replaced so closely? In this Business Beyond, we answer these questions with expert help. We also look into how Russians are still managing to get hold of many Western products, despite the manufacturers refusing to sell to Russian retailers. And ask whether Western brands could ever make a return. It’s a risky bid as courts show little sympathy for firms that leave the country. Hundreds of companies pulled out of Russia in early 2022, after Moscow sent thousands of troops into Ukraine in February that year. Some, like Coca-Cola, finalised their exit in August 2022 five months later, but have since applied to defend their trademarks to protect the brands from losing value and in case they return to the country. But the brands face a sea of opportunists, importers and flip-flopping court rulings. Support us: 🤍 Follow us on: Website: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Linkedin: 🤍 #scmp #World #Russia
Many western companies and brands have temporarily closed their locations in Russia or stopped selling products there. But officials for the some of the companies say they will continue to support their employees. Karina Bafradzhian has the story, narrated by Anna Rice. Since the opening of the first McDonald’s in Russia to the publication of the first Vogue there – Western brands and companies have been actively cultivating the Russian market for three decades. But that all changed when Russia invaded Ukraine. Now businesses are shuttered and thousands of their employees are out of work. While the moves are designed to hurt the Russian government, experts say Russian workers are also taking a hit. Bruce Bean, Michigan State University’s Law School: “There are 62,000 McDonald’s employees and 2,000 Starbucks employees – and that ignores all the supply people. I mean, McDonald’s had to arrange local production of lettuce, tomatoes, buns and everything. All that has been going on for 30 years now. What happens to those guys? Nothing good.” The Russian market accounts for about 9 percent of McDonald’s revenue, but on March 14 all 850 McDonald’s restaurants in Russia closed temporarily, according to the company. For now, the company is promising to keep paying the salary for the thousands of its Russian employees. Companies like Starbucks, KFC and PepsiCo have promised to do the same. But what if this war drags on? Bruce Bean, Michigan State University’s Law School: “How long can McDonald’s afford to pay 62,000 people for not working? I don’t know. A long time probably, but will they?” Russia is also losing western advertisers. Companies like PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and Procter & Gamble are also putting their investments into advertising and marketing on hold. But it’s unclear what kind of impact that will have on Russian media. Bruce Bean, Michigan State University’s Law School: “Advertising is a huge expense for these companies. But I don’t think it’s important for the state Russian media that is more and more controlled by the state… We’ve seen the independent stations and sources being shut down.” Meanwhile, the Kremlin has announced it’s considering a plan to nationalize foreign-owned businesses that have left the country. Despite lacking equipment, staff and even fabric, Russia's fashion industry is striving to grow and fill the huge void left by Western brands quitting the country due to its offensive in Ukraine. The YOU clothing brand has cast itself as an alternative to Spain's Massimo Dutti, which has closed more than 500 shops.
