The train trip with the Andean Explorer from Cusco to Puno at the Lake Titicaca or in the opposite direction is one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. The train is in the style of the 20s and offer an unreal luxury for these altitudes. 10 hours takes the journey for the 390-kilometer route. The starting point is Cusco at 3,300 meters above sea level and the first part is along the river Hutanay. After 210 kilometers, the train reaches the highest point of the trip. At 4,320 meters altitude, the train makes a short break in La Raya. Dazed by the height you can buy typical souvenirs from Peru. At km 281 the train reaches the dusty city of Juliaca with 150,000 inhabitants. The railway line goes right through the bustling market street in the center of the city. Behind the train, the market floods the railway tracks until they get invisible. In the end, the destination is reached. The city of Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca at 3,850 meters above sea level.

The Andean Explorer operates several days a week from Cuzco to Puno and return. This train trip was taken as part of the "Wendy Wu" Panoramic Peru tour in November 2022. The flashing lights in the coaches were a result of camera / coach interface and were not actually flashing.

Ride the Andean Explorer in Peru in South America's on luxury overnight train journey
A slideshow of images from an amazing journey by rail from Cusco to Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. This, without doubt, is one of the Worlds Greatest train journeys! A 10 hour plus trip, through breath taking scenery, up and cross the high plains, the Altiplano! La Raya at 4,321 metres above sea level is the highest point of the journey. Then onto Juliaca before reaching Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. This adventure is just made for photographers, and as you can imagine, I spent the majority of the trip at the back of the observation coach, snapping away. Apart from popping in for an occaisonal Pisco Sour, lunch and coffee! Cameras used were my Nikon D70 with Sigma 18-200mm Zoom (very compact holiday combo) and an Xpan2 (panoramic) film camera with 45mm lens. This was back in late April 2005 by the way. Had it been now, well, DSLR cameras/lenses would be so much better. But as we know, photography is all about observing, composition and light! Most images shown here were from the D70. The gorgeous late afternoon light, aided by a distant storm, provided dramatic cloud formation's and consequently, beautiful images. Fantastico adventure!
