For a boater in distress, VHF radios may be our best option in a boat emergency situation, but for a recreational boater, they are not that easy to use. In this video I cover a few of the major problems with basic handheld marine VHF radios for boating that keep many recreational boaters from having a VHF radio on their boat or using a VHF radio in an emergency. Many basic handheld VHF boat radios do not offer DSC calling and GPS. Without these features, not only are VHF radios challenging for a novice to use while boating, they are not as useful in an emergency as radios equipped with DSC and GPS that are set up with a MMSI on our boats. Apparently it's not available with tinned copper but it's used by oil rigs, so as long as you keep the ends sealed, you might think about trying this. It's cheaper then RG-213 and has a lower db loss rating. Here is it's data if I added it into the chart at the end: $$ | LMR-400 | -1.5db per 100' | 20W with 75' | 40W w/ 3db antenna | 80W w/ 6db antenna. So in my installation, I'd have an effective radiated power of 80 watts in stead of the 60 watts I have now. And it costs less! (I know what I'm trying next.) - SHOP. We explain the City Sailing RYA VHF GMDSS course in detail explaining the set-up, use and theory for your RYA VHF Radio Course. The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) VHF GMDSS course is designed to teach boaters how to use a VHF radio for safety and communication purposes while out at sea. Here are some of the key things that the course covers: Regulations and procedures: The course covers the relevant regulations and procedures for using a VHF radio, including licensing requirements, call signs, and distress procedures. Radio operation: The course teaches the fundamentals of radio operation, including how to use the different channels, how to make a call, how to respond to a call, and how to use DSC (digital selective calling). Emergency procedures: The course covers the emergency procedures for using a VHF radio, including how to send a distress call, how to use the emergency frequency, and how to respond to a distress call. GMDSS: The course provides an overview of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), including the different types of distress signals, the equipment required on board, and the different levels of GMDSS certification. Practical exercises: The course includes practical exercises to help students gain hands-on experience with using a VHF radio, including making calls, sending distress signals, and responding to calls. The RYA VHF GMDSS course is typically taught over two days and includes both classroom instruction and practical exercises. At the end of the course, students will be able to take a written and practical exam to obtain their VHF radio operator's license. A handheld VHF radio, like the Icom M94D used for example in this video, proves to be an essential bit of boating equipment. It is more convenient than a phone for calling a fuel dock or marina. And, when it comes to emergency use, a VHF has no equal: it allows communicating to other boats without needing to know a number and the Coast Guard, and other authorities are always monitoring it. In this episode, Jim Hendricks, our West Coast and Electronics Editor, describes the proper procedure for making a, “ radio check,” call. Boaters use radio checks to, well, check that their VHF radios are working. But many do so, likely without knowing it, in a way that is improper. In this video, Hendricks describes the right way to make a radio check with a marine VHF radio.

We believe every boat should be equipped with a VHF radio for safety, but whether it's a built-in or a hand-held, there are some things you need to know before you buy.
In this episode of Boating Basics, we look at the importance of having and using a VHF marine radio on your boat. Remember to always have your radio on and monitor channel 16 when boating. It can be a life saver.
