Story: 🤍 Sulug Island (Local Name: Pulau Sulug) is one of the five islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (TARP) off Kota Kinabalu City, Sabah, Malaysia. The beach of Sulug Island is pristine so it’s full of coral fragments and seashells. The long strip of white sandy beach is vast and extend far to the sea, more than 120 metres long and about 30 to 40 metres wide. From the sky, Sulug Island looks like sticking its tongue out. There used to be a fishing village inhabited by a hundred Bajau Ubian on Sulug Island. During WWII, the islanders here participated in a revolt against Japanese occupation in 1943. To revenge, Japanese soldiers killed all the adult males on Sulug Island. Due to this dark history, Sulug Island is known as the Darkest Island in Kota Kinabalu and locals think Sulug is a haunted island. Nevertheless, Sulug Island is gorgeous. Pulau Sulug ini bersaiz kecil, tiada kemudahan lengkap untuk pelawat. Namun begitu persekitaran pulaua amat cantik kerana terdapat lambakan batu karang yang menghuni di dasar air sekitar 10 meter bawah laut. Pulau Sulug begitu terkenal untuk aktiviti selam skuba kerana disini penyelam dapat melihat panorama bawah air yang unggul dengan kehadiran ular laut, penyu, pari-pari, ikan katak, terdapat banyak nudibranch atau kupu-kupu laut pastinya memikat hati penyelam. Asal usul nama Pulau Sulug dipercayai sebagai tempat berteduh untuk masyarakt pelarian suku Suluk atau Tausug suatu ketika dahulu. Malaysia Borneo, Sabah, Sulug Island 马来西亚婆罗洲 , 沙巴州属, 苏鹿岛 Located at the southern most tip of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, and furthest from the Kota Kinabalu city coastline, Sulug Island is the least visited islands in this marine park. Sulug Island is also the second smallest in this islands grouping, with an area of just 20 acres. Gazetted into the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park in 1979, Sulug island has remained more or less the same, since there is completely no development here. Compare with the near by Manukan and Mamutik island which have all the essential human comfort like restaurant, canteen, souvenir counter, toilet, and shower area, Sulug island has none at all. What you see at Sulug island is nature at its best. It is also the only island in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park with no entrance fee. Sulug is actually a small round hill island with a unique feature, which is a long sand-spit. This long sand-spit juts out to the ocean facing the east. Either sides of this long sand-spit have good colourful corals, snorkellers will find both these places very pleasing. There are also some good reef patches lie along the northern end of the island. Since there no facilities and shades to hide from the midday sun at Sulug island, may be one can spend an hour snorkelling here and then head to the other islands. For divers Sulug has two good spots to explore, namely Keramat Reef and The Tyers, an artificial reef made from tyres that lies off the beach. Hourly speed boats depart from three Kota Kinabalu jetties. The main jetty is at the Jesselton Point, and two other jetties are at Sutera Harbour and Beach Bums.
