Welcome to Namibia! This is one of the least populated countries in the world, because it mainly consists of desert landscape. We travel along the coast to visit the highlights of the country and start with the absolute number one sight: the Sossusvlei. In the previous episode you saw us driving through the Kalahari desert in search of wild animals. From South Africa we crossed the border into Namibia. There we will travel through mountains, deserts and salt flats in the coming weeks, with stops in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Cape Cross and Etosha National Park. Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Then you saw us in Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia and the Philippines. Zanzibar and Tanzania are already destination number 21 on the big trip. We have also been away from home for a year. Sossusvlei Namibia overland road trip. We spent 2 days and some wonderful hours exploring the red dunes of the Namib desert around Sossusvlei and the incredible Deadvlei, with it's 800 year old camelthorn trees. Entrance is at the Sesriem gate and while there is camping and accommodation available within the park, we opted to stay in a self catering chalet at Desert Quiver Camp, which is around 5km from the entrance gate. It was a huge privilege to witness water in Sossusvlei, something that only happens very occasionally when good rains inland bring water down the Tsauchab River into the desert, where the massive red dunes of the Namib stop it's flow to the sea. Sossusvlei is one of Namibia's most popular tourist attractions and while there were a few other visitors, it was uncrowded, unlike our past visits in years gone by, when getting a photo of Deadvlei without people was a challenge. It's well worth going if you can, before the crowds start to make their way there again. Sossusvlei Namibia is a truly unique landscape. It is the most spectacular landscape in all of Namibia! This large, white, salt, and clay pan is located in the Namib-Naukluft National Park and is surrounded by some of the world's highest sand dunes, reaching almost 400 meters. Last 5km to SOSSUSVLEI | Namibia | 4x4 ONLY!!! The last 5km 4x4 only drive from Sesriem to Sossusvlei in Namibia. The road ends at the Deadvlei car park, with Sossusvlei a few kilometres after that. Remember to engage 4x4 and deflate your tyres for an exciting bit of 4x4 off-road driving. But beware this piece of scenic road takes many casualties especially during the hot hours of the day when the desert sand "turns into water". There is a shuttle available between this point and the Deadvlei car park. It is operated by the Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) and can be booked at the NWR Sesriem office. Namibia is a country of almost-superlatives. The second-least densely populated country in the world is also one of the newest, and is home to some of: the largest dunes, the darkest skies, the oldest cultures, the biggest conservation areas in Africa, the world's last rhinos and the most complex languages on the planet - to name but a few! In this weekly blog series we explore some of Namibia's extremes, and share with you practical information on how you can come and discover them for yourself. Taking on Big Daddy Sossusvlei is surely Namibia's most iconic landscape. The rust-red dunes, bleached white pans and deep blue sky are instantly recognisable, and symbolise the country's vast, dry, uninhabited expanses. The dunes here are some of the highest in the world, and the tallest in this area - at a whopping 325 m - is the appropriately named Big Daddy. The more popular - and widely photographed - Dune 45 is just 80m high, but people still like to climb the monster Big Daddy for two main reasons: firstly, because it overlooks the surreal landscape of Dead Vlei, a white pan filled with the dark fossils of camelthorn trees, and secondly because climbing Big Daddy gives you ultimate bragging rights. Sossusvlei (sometimes written Sossus Vlei) is a salt and clay pan surrounded by high red dunes, located in the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia. The name "Sossusvlei" is often used in an extended meaning to refer to the surrounding area (including other neighbouring vleis such as Deadvlei and other high dunes), which is one of the major visitor attractions of Namibia. The name "Sossusvlei" is of mixed origin and roughly means "dead-end marsh". Vlei is the Afrikaans word for "marsh", while "sossus" is Nama for "no return" or "dead end". Sossusvlei owes this name to the fact that it is an endorheic drainage basin (i.e., a drainage basin without outflows) for the ephemeral Tsauchab River. The dead camel thorn trees at the white clay pan Deadvlei surrounded by high sand dunes is one of the greatest sights in Namibia. Deadvlei, and the nearby salt pan Sossusvlei, are located in the Namib-Naukluft Park. To reach Deadvlei, you drive a 60km sealed road from Sesriem until you reach a car park. That's as far you can get with a 4x2 car, but to continue further on to the Deadvlei parking, you need a 4x4 vehicle. The tar road ends at the 4x2 parking and from there you will have to drive 4km on a sand road. This video covers the full 4km of sand driving between the two parkings.
Driving from WINDHOEK TO SOSSUSVLEI | Namibia Not sure how to drive from Windhoek to Sossusvlei or what to expect along the way? get in the car with me and drive along this amazing route. We start from Windhoek, head south to Rehoboth, go onto the gravel past Namibgrens and down the Spreetshoogte pass, the steepest in Namibia. From there it is on to Solitaire for the best apple pie and cream in the country, followed by Sesriem and the final 65km to Sossusvlei. LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY in NAMIBIA | Chasing Storms in the NAMIB Desert & Sossusvlei In February 2022 I travelled to the Namib Desert to capture a very rare natural event, the desert was in flood. Namibia is known for its arid landscape, but this time, sand dunes were reflecting in water! Over the 5 nights I spent at Sesriem at the entrance to Sossusvlei and the Namib Naukluft Park, I experienced some incredible weather and photographed some dramatic landscapes. This is definitely a bucket list destination. The terrain and natural wonders all around are completely unmatched.
The area around Sossusvlei is some of the most visually appealing places on earth. Don't just take my word for it, watch the video! (To the end, please!) It starts off with us being there as early as possible, and seeing the dried up clay and spots of water from the recent floods. The Dead vlei, or valley, is quite pretty, and it's not hard to see why it is one of the most desirable destinations on earth. It was used in some movies, and is the most popular tourist destinations of Namibia. It only rains every few years, so water is a bit of a rare thing here, and you can see from the desert surrounding that this place is definitely not used to water. For some relief, some wild animals were added into the mix. The Oryx at the end had pretty poor condition, it must be terrible to have to watch your food grow after being hungry and thirsty for so long. It's almost impossible to take a bad picture here, but with a bit of framing and utilizing the light, you just can't stop looking. Yes, the same things that makes for nice photographs also go for video, but since you are not just capturing one instant in time, new rules come into play. This footage was shot on a Sony A7S II, most of it in 4K and then downsampled to 1080p in the editor. Lens used was Sony's 24-240mm, and a relatively cheap tripod on some of the shots. To avoid the scenery looking like just a photo colleage, I left some movement in. Settings were on auto, it's quite hard to do better than the camera's auto functions. As such, very little post-processing was needed. It is difficult to visualise a greater contrast than a desert alongside an ocean. Such a meeting of opposite occurs in Namibia where the edge of the Namib Nauklaft desert pushes a sea of sand into the frigid waters of the South Atlantic. The unique Namib-Nauklaft Park is the most accessible part of the desert, and has numerous interesting features. Sossusvlei area is an ocean of sand dunes up to 300m high, stretching as far as the eye can see. The magnificent red dunes of Sossusvlei twist upwards like a series of petrified rivers, dark on one side, sunlit on the other. The dunes are known as parabolic or cyclic dunes and are caused by wind blowing from several directions simultaneously. Spotted here at the breakfast picnic is a black-backed jackal, which is quite common to see throughout southern Africa. The saddle of black and silver hair is what distinguishes this jackal from others, such as the side-striped jackal. The latter is also extremely shy whereas the black-backed is not. Jackals are skilful survivors and able to eat a varied diet, and if food sources are short they can often be seen scavenging. Off-road driving through Sossusvlei was by far one of the highlights of my Namibia road trip. We may have got stuck twice but the thrill was amazing! Sossusvlei is a national park in the Namib desert. It is home to the highest sand dunes in the world. My goal of our Sossusvlei adventure was to find 'Deadvlei', a pan of dead camel trees in the middle of the Namib desert but let's just say things didn't quite go to plan... We went on an exciting 2-week self-drive road-trip around Namibia. Namibia is a country found on the south west coast of Africa. It's one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world so largely untouched. The name "Sossusvlei" is often used in an extended meaning to refer to the surrounding area (including other neighbouring vleis such as Dead Vlei and other high dunes), which is one of the major visitor attractions of Namibia. The name "Sossusvlei" is of mixed origin, and roughly means "dead end marsh". Vlei is the Afrikaans word for "marsh", while "sossus" is nama for "no return" or "dead end". Sossusvlei owes this name to the fact that it is an endorheic drainage basin (i.e., a drainage basin without outflows) for the ephemeral Tsauchab River. Environment The Sossusvlei pan proper is the flat ellipse in a lighter shade of color seen behind the dune in foreground (mostly on its right). The Sossusvlei area belongs to a wider region of southern Namib with homogeneous features (about 32.000 km²) extending between rivers Koichab and Kuiseb. This area is characterized by high sand dunes of vivid pink-to-orange color, a consequence of a high percentage of iron in the sand and consequent oxidation processes. The oldest dunes are those of a more intense reddish color. These dunes are among the highest in the world; many of them are above 200 metres, the highest being the one nicknamed Big Daddy, about 380 metres high. The highest and more stable dunes are partially covered with a relatively rich vegetation, which is mainly watered by a number of underground and ephemeral rivers that seasonally flood the pans, creating marshes that are locally known as vlei; when dry, these pans look almost white in color, due to the high concentration of salt. Fauna in the Sossusvlei area is relatively rich. It mostly comprises small animals that can survive with little water, including a number of arthropods, small reptiles and small mammalians such as rodents or jackals); bigger animals include antelopes (mainly Oryxes and springboks) and ostriches. During the flood season, several migrant bird species appear along the marshes and rivers. Much of the Sossusvlei and Namib fauna is endemic and highly adapted to the specific features of the Namib. Most notably, fog beetles such as the Namib Desert Beetle have developed a technique for collecting water from early morning fogs through the bumps in their back. Sossusvlei Sossusvlei is about 66 km past the Sesriem gate. The last 6 km can only be traversed with 4WD vehicles as the concrete road ends and sand begins (the place where the concrete road ends is known as "2x4 parking" as any non-4WD vehicle must stop there). Sossusvlei is a clay pan, of roughly elliptical shape, covered in a crust of salt-rich sand.[1] While the pan has been shaped over time by the Tsauchab river, the actual flooding of the pan is a relatively rare event, and sometimes several years pass between one flood and the next one. The river is dry most of the year, and even when it is not, it carries relatively little water to the vlei.
