Why did Pushkin choose to write about Queen of Spades and not Hearts or Diamonds? Hermann, the protagonist of the Queen of Spades is obsessed with a secret of three cards. And hopes to win big money with this secret. He tries to extort this secret from the old duchess, but fails and scares her to death. During the game, instead of the expected ace, he gets a queen of spades looking like the old duchess. Hermann loses his fortune and goes insane. He lost something bigger than his money. He gambled with his identity and lost it. The novel is full of mystic motifs popular during Pushkin’s time. The Queen of Spades was believed to be the most mysterious card. It signified “secret malevolence” . That is why Pushkin ironically chooses this card. It is a symbol of defeat for those who are ready to abandon their humanity for the sake of victory. Whose personality becomes flat, just like a card.
