After EUGENE ONEGIN, THE QUEEN OF SPADES is Tchaikovsky’s second adaptation of a text by the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. It is Tchaikovsky’s brother Modest who reworks Pushkin’s short story into a libretto. Liza loves Herman, a young officer. But the latter wants to draw a secret from her grandmother, the old Countess: How is it that she is such a successful gambler? Herman confronts her and forces her to reveal her secret, menacing her with a revolver. The Countess dies from the shock. It is her ghost that later appears before the young officer and gives away the fatal sequence of cards: three, seven, ace… - Տես ավելին՝ 🤍 See More

On her new album 'Amata dalle tenebre' the superstar recorded some of the most dramatic and impassioned arias in the repertoire, at Milan’s legendary La Scala, with the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala under La Scala’s Music Director, Riccardo Chailly. Italian filmmaker Elena Petitti di Roreto has immortalised four of Netrebko’s performances in music videos that form part of a captivating avantgarde music film: “Anna – Stage of Emotions”, a radical mix of the sensual essence of opera and a contemporary visual vocabulary. In recent years, the singer has turned, with notable success, to some of opera’s more dramatic roles and she demonstrates her mastery of this repertoire here as well, bringing some wonderfully lush, dark colours to Tchaikovsky’s role of Lisa in the aria “Akh! istomilas ya gorem” from the opera “Pique Dame”. Martha Mödl's incomparably creepy Countess is the central feature in this Queen of Spades. Wiener Staatsoper LIVE 1992; Conductor - Seiji Ozawa. Tchaikovsky's Pique Dame/Queen of Spades An important record of an international theatrical event. One year after the fall of the Soviet Union, a Russian tenor, an Italian soprano, and a Japanese conductor converge in Vienna with Martha Mödl. The performance is boiling with dramatic intensity. Atlantov is at his greatest, looking handsome and heroic, tender and involved with Freni. Young Vesselina Kasarova is at the beginning of her career, Mödl is at the end. An interview with Martha Mödl follows the opera. Germann - Vladimir Atlantov Liza - Mirella Freni Countess - Martha Mödl Pauline - Vesselina Kasarova Yeletzky - Vladimir Chernov Tomsky - Sergei Leiferkus Governess - Anna Gonda Chaplitsky - Franz Kasemann Masha - Yvette Tannenberg Surin - Rudolf Mazzola (bass) Chekalinsky - Wilfried Gahmlich (tenor) Narumov - Peter Koeves Pyotr Tchaikovsky Libretto - Modest Tchaikovsky

_ © Copyright 1999 by RUNDEL Publications / Musikverlag GmbH • D-88430 Rot an der Rot International Copyright secured · All rights reserved · Alle Rechte vorbehalten. 🤍

Hans Neuenfels, the luminary of modern director’s theatre, provides a compelling, multi-layered staging of Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame at Salzburg Festival. In the stark, mostly abstract sets by Christian Schmidt, Neuenfels “draws gripping performances from a strong cast” (The New York Times) including Brandon Jovanovich and Evgenia Muraveva in the title roles of Herman and Lisa and legendary singer Hanna Schwarz as Countess. Mariss Jansons, “a compelling director in his element” (The New York Times) makes his rare appearance as an opera conductor, at the helm of the Wiener Philharmoniker – “Another triumph in this hot festival summer!“ (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). Mariss Jansons, “maybe the best connoisseur of this unjustly neglected opera” (Süddeutsche Zeitung), turns this Queen of Spades with as much verve as sensitivity into a “captivating musical drama” (Die Zeit). He encounters a noteworthy cast and under his baton the orchestra sounds “brilliant and splendid“ (Der Tagesspiegel). Renowned director Stefan Herheim staged Tchaikovsky’s much-loved opera about a young man who, for the prospect of earthly wealth, gambles away his chance for love and happiness. Herheim, whose stagings are famous for their multi layered levels of interpretation, attempts to reflect on the composer’s hidden love for men. “The Latvian maestro, the intriguingly performing orchestra, the smartly-chosen soloists, and director Stefan Herheim have succeeded in staging an extraordinary production” (Die Presse). “Stefan Herheim makes a great picture show out of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Pique Dame’” (NMZ). “A masterpiece” (Der Standard).
