It's been around for well over 30 years, and in that time, the Mazda MX-5 has become by far and away the world's best-selling two-seater sports car. Why? Two reasons. So let’s examine how these four RWD pocket rockets compare. Starting with the Mk1, it was released back in 1989, and it’s powered by a 1.8-litre naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder that can produce 131hp and 152Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual, and it tips the scales at 990kg. Alongside it, we have Mat in the Mk2 facelift. This was released in 1998, and under the bonnet, you’ll find a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder that can put down 146hp and 168Nm. Just like the Mk1, power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual, but this car is slightly heavier, weighing in at 1,065kg. Next up is the Mk3. It’s powered by a 2-litre 4 cylinder that can produce 160hp and 188Nm, and this time power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual. It’s the heaviest car in this line-up, tipping the scales at 1,100kg. Then finally we have the newest car, the Mk4 - and it’s the anniversary edition! It’s housing a 2-litre 4-cylinder under the bonnet, and it’ll come as no surprise that it’s the most powerful car here, producing 184hp and 205Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual, and it weighs in at 1,030kg. So will it be a clean sweep for the Mk4? Or could we see one of the older cars snatch a surprise win? While the rear suspension of the MX-5 already helps keep the vehicle planted when braking, KPC then applies a very slight brake to the inner rear wheel during high-g cornering. This pulls down on that corner, suppressing body roll, and making steering response feel more linear through tight or rough corners. This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2023 Mazda MX5 or Miata roadster convertible. The MX-5 is such a special convertible, not only is it an affordable option but it’s fun to drive especially with the manual transmission. I learned to drive manual on an MX-5 so this car holds a special place in my heart. It’s an absolute joy to drive. This Mazda has a 2L 4-cylinder with a 6-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic transmission, 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, RWD only. In Canada, the automatic is an option on trims one up from the base model but in the US it is only available on the top Grand Touring trim. The MX-5 is a two-passenger sports car that has a classic and sporty exterior design. Whether you decide on the soft top or hard top, it’s one of those cars you park and look back at to admire, it has beautiful lines. It comes standard with LED headlights, LED rear combination lights, 17” wheels in Canada, 16” in the US, available 17” and you get a tire repair kit. The interior is simplistic with a 7” touchscreen and wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto. It comes standard with black cloth upholstery with black stitching, available black cloth with grey stitching, black leather on the top trim and optional terracotta or white Nappa leather for $400 CAD/$300 USD. White Nappa is not available in the US. One up from the base model adds the 12-speaker Bose sound system and heated front seats. The top trim has navigation and wireless Apple Carplay. In the US, the Club trim one up from the base model gets wireless Apple Carplay. In Canada, the GS trim is $33,300 CAD, GS-P $37,300 CAD, GT $40,400 CAD. From The MX-5 Press Kit: "Following the success of the third-generation MX-5 PRHT (power retractable hardtop), Mazda went a very different direction with the design of its power-folding fourth-gen. Called the MX-5 RF—for retractable fastback—the latest version of Mazda’s longstanding sports car was seen as the tuxedo complement to the roadster’s track suit. Its top took all of 13 seconds to go from closed to open, or vice versa. MX-5 RF also introduced an aura of premium aesthetics in its seductive appeal, complemented with its Machine Gray Metallic paint, hand-painted black top and Auburn Nappa leather interior. MX-5 RF captivated show-goers, retaining its familiarity with its soft-top sibling but charting new territory with the only top of its kind this side of six figures. The color combination proved so captivating that Mazda North American Operations sought to offer it exclusively as a 1,000-unit Launch Edition, giving the first customers of the MX-5 RF—some of Mazda’s most loyal customers— but one option: six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission or six-speed automatic." Ten Second Review It's hard not to like the fourth generation Mazda MX-5, a sportscar the brand is unwilling to fundamentally change - and for good reason. It now has an upgraded range of trim levels and in recent times, Mazda has added in a clever Kinematic Posture Control system for extra cornering stability. As before, there are 1.5 and 2.0-litre petrol engine options for the Roadster and RF body styles and anything this car lacks in outright power, it more than makes up in agility and tactility. Background Is there another affordable sporting car sold today that rivals the Mazda MX-5's legacy? The Porsche 911 is an icon, the Toyota GR86 might well become one and the Volkswagen Golf GTI is a name most can identify with. But the MX-5 is special. It has rewritten the record books again and again for sports car sales and its recipe of light weight, driver focus and simple front engine/rear drive layout just has an inherent rightness about it that hasn't dated. But, as is the case with most cars, successive generations get bigger and heavier. The MX-5 hasn't been immune to this issue, customers demanding improved safety, more equipment and better quality as each successive generation has been developed. With this MK4 model though, originally launched back in 2015, Mazda drew a line in the sand and went back to the light, tactile approach that made the MX-5 so great in the first place.
