Visiting The World's Whisky Island | Islay

I visit the Scottish Island of Islay, the world’s only whisky island 🥃. The Isle of Islay, located on Scotland’s west coast is one of Scotland whisky regions, known for its Islay peated whisky and home to 9 working Islay distilleries. Islay can be accessed by a 2-3 hour ferry from Kennacraig or Oban or it’s possible to fly with flights from Glasgow taking around 45 minutes. I take the Calmac ferry to Isle of Islay with my campervan Ernie and aswell as exploring the island, I also do my own Islay whisky tour. I taste Islay single malts at some of the distilleries on the whisky trail near Port Ellen but I also pick up some driver’s drams so I can do my own whisky tasting and decide for myself which is the best Islay whisky back at the Islay campsite. Islay scotch is renowned worldwide and I make it my goal to visit all 9 Islay distilleries during my time on the island - Kilchoman, Laphroaig, Lagavullin, Ardbeg, Bowmore, Bunnahabhain, Ardnahoe, Caol Ila and Bruichladdich. The more Islay scotch I try, the more of a whisky fan I become! Join me on this Scotland travel adventure through Islay as I learn more about whisky, Scotland’s national drink! 📖 Check out my FREE campervan buying checklist here - 🤍 WHO AM I? I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland. I moved overseas after university in 2011 and I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in my home country Scotland and I’ve never even visited places like the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Skye or the NC500. I am a huge fan of campervan travel and alternative living and while living in Japan, my partner and I converted both a van and a bus into campervans. We explored Japan extensively, sharing our adventures on our two Japanese language YouTube channels. I've spent over 600 nights living in vans, it’s my favourite way to travel due to the incredible freedom, adventure and the affordability. My campervan is a 2001 Toyota Hiace high roof van. It was originally used by the Royal Mail and then purchased by the previous owner and self-converted into a DIY campervan. Although the van is already converted, in order for it to be an off-grid living van, it requires some campervan DIY, especially when it comes to electrics and plumbing. On this channel, I’ll be sharing more about this van, any DIY I do, and most importantly sharing my road trip adventures as I finally get to travel my beautiful home country of…. SCOTLAND! In today's vlog, we show you what to do on Islay if you're coming over for a short visit. We were joined by our good friends - Ewelina and Artur, two really cool creatives. Both have never been to Islay before but are frequent travelers to different parts of Scotland. On this trip, we only had three days to show them some of Islay's best spots and battle with the weather that's typical for this time of the year. If you are planning a trip to Islay, we would recommend at least a week but this is a good wee guide if you're here for a short time. We also stay at Bruichladdich so mostly focused on that side of the island. Thanks for watching! I've always felt that trips to Islay end up being much more than the whisky, and I knew I wasn't alone. I wanted my most recent trip for the annual Fèis Ìle to attempt to capture what it was, and connect with those who felt the same way. As we toured Lagavulin, Bunnahabhain, Bruichladdich, Kilchoman, Laphroaig and Ardbeg we met up with so many people there for the whisky yet seduced by the magic of the island and it's people. We weren't able to tour Caol Ila, Bowmore or Ardnahoe this visit, but we can't wait to go back. We had magical final moments sipping 1970's Port Ellen outside the old distillery itself and then on the Islay peat fields. Wonderful. This video was possible due to the awesome Aqvavitae Evangelists, Disciples & Drambassadors who choose to sponsor the channel through Patreon. I hope the enjoyment this video brings in some way helps to say thanks for the continued and valued support. This has been my most ambitious solo project to date, and borne from the love I have of that little Island off the West coast of Scotland. I hope you'll indulge the video length. Islay……. a place of rich history, rugged landscape, rare wildlife, and a whisky heritage like no other. It’s a place of renowned friendliness, beautiful scenery, and over 3,000 years of compressed, waterlogged moss, vegetation and plants that have grown and died, creating the Peat banks of today. There is nowhere else on earth like it. A quest to find Scotland’s best whisky might bring you to the island, and as many of you find out, Islay is so much more and the very reason why you stay, immigrate, or become returning visitors for years to come. There are nine iconic distilleries here, with a few more distilleries planned and approved to include Port Ellen. Some of the most famous names in the whisky world are located here. All on an island of 3,000 people. Whisky is, of course, Islay’s ultimate claim to fame; it is a way of life on this windswept isle. That said, there is so much more to Islay’s charm than its golden drams: the landscape, the light, the coast, the cuisine, and the locals. While most of them were short lived and their memories have faded, a few still linger on in stories, ruined buildings and place names. ARDENISTIEL Ardenistiel was founded in 1821, next door to Laphroaig and sharing its water source; James and Andrew Stein, of the noted Stein family of distillers, were hired to manage the distillery. ARDMORE Not to be confused with the Highland distillery of the same name, Ardmore was founded in 1817 and sat next door to Lagavulin, backing on to the same secluded bay. By 1825 they were both operated by John Johnston, and within 20 years the two distilleries were sold and merged to form the Lagavulin distillery we know today. DAILL Founded in 1814, Daill was a farm distillery owned by the McEachern family. Not much is known about it, but by 1834 it had closed. Daill Farm still exists and a number of buildings on the estate could well have been used for distilling. LOCHINDAAL/PORT CHARLOTTE Established in 1829, Lochindaal was a purpose-built site in the middle of the village of Port Charlotte. Situated in the Rhinns of Islay, the western peninsula where Bruichladdich and Kilchoman are based today, it passed through many hands during its 100 years of operation. LOSSIT Lossit Distillery was established in 1826 at Lossit Kennels, near to Ballygrant, just off the road between Bridgend and Port Askaig. It operated as a farm distillery until the 1860s, at which point it closed. MALT MILL The most legendary and famed of closed Islay distilleries, Malt Mill also has one of the simplest stories. When Lagavulin owner Peter Mackie lost the sales agency for Laphroaig’s whisky in 1907, he decided to make his own Laphroaig. He built a small replica of his rival on-site at Lagavulin, but despite considerable effort, the whisky did not taste like Laphroaig and the project was a failure. MULINDRY Established in 1826, Mulindy didn’t last long. Built by the River Laggan a few miles from Bowmore, it had closed by 1831 – the owner went bankrupt and emigrated to the USA amid rumours that he enjoyed his distillery’s whisky a little too much. Today, little remains of the site other than a derelict croft. NEWTON Newton was a farm distillery situated on the road from Bridgend to Ballygrant. Established in 1819, it operated until 1837, and little is known about the site. Today, Newton House still exists and has an outbuilding with barred windows that may have been used for bonded storage. OCTOMORE Sat in the hills behind Port Charlotte, Octomore was a farm distillery owned by the Montgomery family. It was established in 1816, but like many farm distilleries it didn’t last long, falling into disrepair by the 1940s. SCARRABUS Scarrabus, maybe situated near the site of the present-day Scarrabus farm, is almost certainly the shortest lived of the farm distilleries on Islay. TALLANT Founded in 1821 by Donald and John Johnston, the distillery was built at Tallant Farm near Bowmore. It was not a profitable operation and the business folded in 1852. However, it remains an interesting footnote in Islay’s distilling history, as the Johnston family also established Laphroaig. About Islay: Islay is the southernmost of the Inner Hebrides islands, off the west coast of Scotland. Along with the neighbouring island of Jura, it’s known for its whisky. Numerous distilleries produce the island’s characteristically peaty single malts. In the northeast, 2 islands on Loch Finlaggan are dotted with the remains of an ancient settlement, including a prehistoric fort and medieval tombstones. The islands of the Inner Hebrides are stunning in many ways. Some have Caribbean white beaches and others like Islay are studded with distilleries. Islay is over two hours sailing so feels like a mini adventure when you catch the 7am ferry and the sea is like glass! What an amazing day, choose to visit any of the nine distilleries and you will love it. The combination of a gentle ferry crossing while enjoying a surprisingly good breakfast, biking and visiting different whisky producers is perfection!

03.03.2023

Today I am taking on an intimidating, arduous, and fun task. I am attempting to create a power ranking formula and rating system to evaluate which Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery is the best on the island, much like you would see for a sports league determing which is the best or most in form team. I have gone ahead and ranked all of the Islay Distilleries assigning them a score between 1-100. 20 points are assigned for the Legacy, 30 for the core range, 30 for the special releases, and another 20 for Independent bottlers/Single Casks. I have assigned a score to each of: Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Bunnahabhain, Bruichladdich, Caol Ila, Kilchoman, and Bowmore. Watch the video to find out where your favourite Islay Single Malt Scotch Distillery ranks. Will they be at the top of the list? Continuing our exploration of the Isle of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, Scotland. we come to the rocky peninsula of the Mull of Oa. We first visit the only shop on Oa - in a telephone box - then walk through the RSPB Nature Reserve to the American Monumnet, commemorating those lost on two ships off Islay during World War 1. We then follow the coast back to our car.

On today's vlog, we take you to a hidden gem on the island of Islay. A remote sheltered beach, accessible by foot or by boat, known mostly only by locals. The beach has been known in Calum's family as The Waterfall Beach but its actual name is Port An Eas which translates as Tune of the Waterfall in Gaelic. We show you how to get to this beautiful spot and how we enjoyed our day there with some wild swimming, frisby, and cooking a delicious vegan BBQ. Hope you enjoy and we look forward to seeing you on our next adventure. → You can connect with us on Instagram: 🤍 →You can also follow Calum's instagram for whisky adventures: 🤍 →And Roks artistic side: 🤍

Maybe it was all the day drinking, but that was the most fun we've ever had on a trip! 😅 This will not be a full overview of the tour with Rabbie's, but please let me know if you have any specific questions about it. Ben and I looked up youtube videos for the Islay whisky tour prior to booking. I didn't want there to be any confusion with this video, and what I'm going to talk about. The short answer is: highly recommend ❤️ Distillery info below. Correction - my backpack was 35L, not 32L The Allpa 35L Travel Pack: 🤍 Distilleries visited: Ardbeg - full tour Ardnahoe - tasting blends. My favorite was Hebridean Journey Bowmore - full tour Bruichladdich - tasting. I got to try Ocotmore, and I loved it. The sensation is like nothing else. I plan to buy a bottle soon. Bunnahabhain - We stopped in. Some people did tastings there. Ben and I bought a tasting set with tiny bottles to take home because we needed pace ourselves. Lagavulin - tasting. We felt very lucky to have our tasting led by Iain McArthur before his retirement. He was amazing, and they were *very* generous on this tour. Well worth the price. Laphroaig - full tour Side note, I learned a few things while putting this video together. I'm going to remember them for my next trip so I can start making proper travel vlogs 😊
