This democratic exercise is what we call the State of the European Union debate. Over the past year, the EU has weathered an energy crisis, continued supporting Ukraine and worked on creating a green and digital future. These are some of the issues that Parliament members will address during the 2023 edition of the State of the EU debate. They will question European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and make sure that the European Commission is setting the right priorities.

The EU collectively represents the third largest economy in the world, after China and the USA, with a population of 447 million people and 20 member countries that use the Euro, the second most widely held reserve currency after the USD. The five biggest countries in the EU by population are Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Poland, and the region has a significant impact on the global economy. However, the EU faces several significant economic challenges, including the debt crisis, Brexit, and tensions with major energy suppliers. We will also examine the potential impact of a non-unified Europe on the global economy and the likelihood of other nations following the UK's example and leaving the union. By exploring these issues, viewers can gain insights into the workings of economic unions and the potential future of the EU. ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ The Economic Explained team uses Statista for conducting our research. #geopolitics #eu Over the past month and a half, European cities have witnessed a surge in protests both in support of Israel and Palestine. Simultaneously, the European Union Coordinator tasked with combatting anti-Muslim hatred has raised concerns about the increasing prevalence of Islamophobic and antisemitic narratives across the continent. The European Union (EU) Member States find themselves in a state of division, evident in various public events and voting records. Although all Member States unanimously condemned the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel that occurred on October 7, their responses to Israel's subsequent actions in Gaza vary widely. In the United Nations meeting, European countries seem to have split into three groups on the issue. First, some support stopping the fighting. Second, some are not voting because they're frustrated. They think the resolutions don't clearly say that Hamas is doing wrong and don't mention that Israel has the right to defend itself. Third, some vote against the resolutions. They believe the resolutions don't talk enough about Israel's rights. This split in the European Union shows how different countries see things in various ways. The challenge is to agree on what to say and do about the conflict between Israel and Palestine. It's not easy because each country has its own views, history, and priorities. As they discuss this in the United Nations, finding common ground seems tough and as some say, impossible. The recent United Nations General Assembly Resolution ES-10/21, which urged for an immediate and lasting humanitarian truce, gained support from most European Union countries, notably France. On the other hand, certain countries within the EU, such as Germany and Italy, chose to abstain from voting on the resolution. Notably, among the 14 nations that opposed the resolution entirely, four were EU Member States, with the Czech Republic and Hungary included in this group.

European Union member states and lawmakers reached a preliminary agreement on what they touted as the world's first comprehensive AI legislation on Friday. This landmark deal aims to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, including ChatGPT and governments' use of AI in biometric surveillance. According to the European Parliament the new deal sets a global precedent as the world's first AI law, with the EU poised to be the first major region to implement such laws. "Historic! The EU becomes the very first continent to set clear rules for the use of AI," EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, said on social media. "The AI Act is much more than a rulebook — it's a launch pad for EU startups and researchers to lead the global AI race." European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen heralded the "global first" AI Act "for the safety and fundamental rights of people and businesses." The agreement is sure to draw close attention from AI companies as various global players mull similar regulations.
