SSH Vs Telnet SSH and Telnet are used to achieve the same result, to connect to the switch/router remotely however SSH and Telnet couldn't be more different in terms of security. While Telnet is still widely used but it has a BIG security flaw, it transmits all login details in PLAIN TEXT causing a huge security vulnerability and allowing anyone with the know how to pick out the logging information to you Cisco devices! SSH on the overhand is completely secure and should be used over telnet every time. It uses a very clever process that encrypts and decrypts the data that is sent, you can read more on how it is done here 🤍 SSH does have a few extra steps involved but still only takes a few minutes to set up as this videos shows you. This video uses a Cisco 3550 Switch however the process is the same for switches and routers. If you like the video please like, comment, subscribe #ccna #cisco #networking

How to set up Secure Shell (SSH) in Cisco Packet Tracer What is Secure Shell (SSH) you might ask!? SSH protocol uses public-key cryptography to authenticate the remote computer and allow it to authenticate the user, if necessary. There are several ways to use SSH; one is to use automatically generated public-private key pairs to simply encrypt a network connection, and then use password authentication to log on. Out side of PT, on a real computer you can use the program called putty to SSH in to your interfaces.
Configuring Secure Shell (SSH) On Cisco Devices Lab - Part 2 of 4 Secure Shell (SSH) offers more security than Telnet in that SSH encrypts all communications while Telnet sends all communication in plaintext. Cisco recommends that you use SSH instead of Telnet for accessing your Cisco devices. Configuration of SSH is pretty straight forward but requires a newer IOS version (that supports DES and/or 3DES). It's also important to realize that SSH uses a username/password combination so you will not be able to use the VTY line password. You'll need to either configure a local username database, or use a technology like TACACS+. Depending on your IOS version, your device may support SSH-1 or both SSH-1 and SSH-2. If your device supports both versions then you can specify which version your device will support. By default, it will allow SSH clients to use all versions that it supports.

How to Configure SSH on Cisco IOS Secure Shell (SSH) is a protocol which provides a secure remote access connection to network devices. Communication between the client and server is encrypted in both SSH version 1 and SSH version 2. Implement SSH version 2 when possible because it uses a more enhanced security encryption algorithm. Requirements The Cisco IOS image used must be a k9(crypto) image in order to support SSH. For example c3750e-universalk9-tar.122-35.SE5.tar is a k9 (crypto) image. Routing TCP/IP, Volume 1 ➤ 🤍 Routing TCP/IP, Volume 2 ➤ 🤍 TELNET should never be used in a production network it's unsecure and the data can easily be seen in a packet capture. I show you this live on the cli. After telnetting to another router, the wireshark capture is examined and we can easily see the data being sent across including the usernames, passwords and more. The more secure way to remotely manage devices is to use SSH. SSH is a network protocol used to remotely access and manage a devices. The main difference between Telnet and SSH is that SSH uses encryption, which means that all data transmitted over a network is secure from eavesdropping. After SSH is configured and tested, I go back to the wireshark capture for analysis and we can see the data going across is encrypted. This is what you want especially in production environments. In this video we talk about on of the most interesting topics in Cisco Networking- remote access via SSH to a Cisco router. By default, when you configure a Cisco router, you have to use the console cable and connect directly to the system to access it. Follow the steps shown in this video, which will enable SSH access to your Cisco router/switch. Once you enable SSH, you can access it remotely using PuTTY or any other SSH client. The SSH protocol (also referred to as Secure Shell) is a method for secure remote login from one computer to another. It provides several alternative options for strong authentication, and it protects the communications security and integrity with strong encryption. It is a secure alternative to the non-protected login protocols (such as telnet, rlogin) and insecure file transfer methods (such as FTP).
