Corporal R.J. Mitchell and his Marines lined up flush against the wall and peeked through the doorway. Beams of sunlight streamed into a large room, illuminating dust in the air. Lying in the middle of the room was the body of a man killed by the last Marines to enter the house. Mitchell knew there were other insurgents in the house, but he didn’t know where. He was on a mission to rescue wounded Marines, and he could see the bedroom where they were trapped. The Marines would have to cross the room in the middle of the house to get there, a large space with no cover. Mitchell tapped the shoulder of the man in front of him and they charged. Mitchell made it. But as he began tending to one of the wounded, the Marines who followed Mitchell into the center room were torn down by a hail of gunfire from above. There were men perched above them on a second-floor landing, positioned to fire on anyone who stepped into the room. It was, in the words of a news photographer present that day, a perfect kill zone. Yesterday in 2004, #Marines launched the Second Battle of Fallujah, also known as Operation Phantom Fury. For more than six weeks, Marines and Soldiers fought alongside coalition partners to clear the city of insurgents. The street-to-street and house-to-house fighting was some of the most intense combat of the Iraq War, and led to acts of exceptional courage by Marines and Soldiers. Nine Marines were awarded the Navy Cross for their heroism, and U.S. Army Staff Sergeant David Bellavia received the Medal of Honor. #Marines #BattleofFallujah #OperationPhantomFury

Shoot the Messenger (2005): How one journalist's footage from Fallujah in the Iraq War caused a firestorm over acceptable rules of combat Subscribe to Journeyman for more: 🤍 For downloads and more information visit: 🤍 The horrific shooting of an unarmed wounded Iraqi in a mosque shocked the world. But what really happened that day was never publicised. This exclusive report reveals the true story. "I knew I had filmed something that has been captured on camera very few times in war," states NBC reporter Kevin Sites. His footage of a marine shooting a wounded combatant was so shocking that most American audiences didn't even get to see it. NBC released only a single black and white still. But even worse than the shooting, Sites alleges that four other wounded men were also killed in cold blood that day at the mosque. "These men were definitely shot again, freshly shot, after having been wounded the day before." The killing of the other insurgents was largely ignored by the media at the time. With the war such a hot political issue in America, the press is reluctant to criticise the actions of its own soldiers. In the original NBC report, Sites went to great lengths to justify the marine's actions. But while the soldier involved was cleared of any wrong doing, Sites himself came under attack for releasing the footage. "I received thousands of hate mails and death threats saying I was a traitor." The real issue of acceptable rules of combat seems to have been lost in the rush to discredit Sites. Marine firing STORYLINE: A fierce firefight between US marines and Iraqi insurgents in the city of Fallujah that took place overnight on Monday, despite a tenuous ceasefire between the two. Marines are seen targeting positions and trading fire with Iraqi insurgents. One marine was killed and seven others, including a television producer with the troops, were injured during the firefight, the military said. It is unclear if any Iraqis were killed in the gunbattle. On Tuesday an American apache helicopter crashed and was destroyed outside Fallujah. Fighters said they shot it down with a rocket-propelled grenade. While Fallujah has been relatively calm for four days, the area between the besieged city and Baghdad has seen heavy clashes between gunmen and US forces. Insurgents shot down another Apache on Sunday in nearby Abu Ghraib, killing its two crewmembers. In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives. The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor. Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time. But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. VICE News embedded with Iraq’s Golden Division Special Forces unit as they fought their way into the villages surrounding the city of Hit, where they encountered ambushes, sniper fire, and tried to sort suspected Islamic State operatives and sympathizers from innocent Iraqi civilians. After six days of fighting in Fallujah, US and Iraqi officals are tonight declaring mission accomplished. American forces control the city - and claim they have killed more than a thousand insurgents. Little information though is coming out about the number of civilians in Fallujah - an International Red Crescent convoy has today entered the city - but their representative in Baghdad has told us US forces are preventing them from distributing any aid. We have also learnt that US forces have found the passport of a Japanese hostage beheaded last month by Iraqi militants. Various shots of foot patrol STORYLINE: Up to 40 Iraqi insU-R-G-E-N-Ts attacked U-S Marines in northern Fallujah on Wednesday, setting off a heavy gunbattle, Marines said, as an agreement bringing peace to the besieged city hit snags a day after implementation began. Explosions were heard coming from the scene of the fighting, and Cobra helicopter gunships were blasting with Gatling guns from the air. The attack came as U-S Marine commanders said no guerrillas have come forward so far to turn in their heavy weapons, a key tenet of the agreement that began being implemented on Tuesday. The Marines, in response, halted a key commitment on their side in the deal, the return of Fallujah residents to the city. The attack began just after daybreak when the insU-R-G-E-N-Ts launched a frontal assault on the Marines position with a barrage of rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire, Marines said. Nine insU-R-G-E-N-Ts were killed, and three Marines were wounded, a spokesman said. Captain Matt Watt, of the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines regiment, said he doubted the battle would scuttle Monday's agreement, suggesting it was an isolated attack by a relatively small group of guerrillas. U-S commanders have warned that they could launch an all-out attack on the city if the agreement - announced on Monday after negotiations between U-S officials and Fallujah civil leaders - falls through. So far, however, Marines were only putting parts of the deal on hold in response. Byrne said guerrillas had turned in no weapons since Iraqi security forces deployed in the city on Tuesday on a mission to collect heavy weapons. In response to the failure to disarm so far, Marines stopped allowing the return of families who fled Fallujah during the fighting - a top concern of the Fallujans. From the start, the fragile agreement had depended on how much the city's guerrillas complied with a call by city officials for them to turn in heavy weapons.
