The Apache AH-64 and its variants are arguably the most advanced series of attack helicopters the world has ever seen. When the original Apache AH-64 was produced in 1975 it represented a major milestone in assault helicopter flight and ever since it has become an icon of warfare. The Apache has seen plenty of changes in the several decades since its original launch and the latest of these is the ‘E’ version having been released into service in 2011. We’re going to take a look at the original on which this type is based and tell the story of how the world’s most powerful attack helicopter came into being. The AH-64 Apache is a twin-engine, four bladed, multi-mission attack helicopter designed as a highly stable aerial weapons-delivery platform. It is designed to fight and survive during the day, night, and in adverse weather throughout the world. After we all know about its sophistication, it's time to see 8 variants of the helicopter: #1 we have AH-64A The AH-64A is the original production attack helicopter. The crew sit in tandem in an armored compartment. It is powered by two GE T700 turboshaft engines. The A-model was equipped with the 701 engine version until 1990 when the engines were switched to the more powerful 701C version. #2 AH-64B The AH-64B was a proposed upgrade to 254 AH-64As. The upgrade would have included new rotor blades, a Global Positioning System (GPS), improved navigation systems and new radios. #3 AH-64C The C upgrade would include all changes to be included in the Longbow except for mast-mounted radar and newer 700C engine versions. #4 AH-64D The AH-64D Apache Longbow is equipped with a glass cockpit and advanced sensors, the most noticeable of which being the AN/APG-78 Longbow millimeter-wave fire-control radar (FCR) target acquisition system and the Radar Frequency Interferometer (RFI), housed in a dome located above the main rotor. The aircraft is powered by a pair of uprated T700-GE-701C engines. #5 AH-64E Formerly known as AH-64D Block III, in 2012, it was redesignated as AH-64E Guardian to represent its increased capabilities. The AH-64E features improved digital connectivity, the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System, more powerful T700-GE-701D engines with upgraded face gear transmission to accommodate more power, capability to control unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), full IFR capability, and improved landing gear. #6 AH-64F The conceptual AH-64F would have greater speed via a new 3,000 shp turboshaft engine from the Improved Turbine Engine Program, retractable landing gear, stub wings to offload lift from the main rotor during cruise, and a tail rotor that can articulate 90 degrees to provide forward thrust. #7 Compound Apache In October 2018, Boeing began testing the AH-64E Block 2 Compound, a compound helicopter design which added a larger fixed wing and a pusher propeller to the Apache airframe to provide additional lift and thrust, respectively. In addition, the engine exhaust was redirected downwards. Collectively, the modifications were anticipated to improve speed to 185 kn, range to 460 nmi, payload to 5,900 lb, and fuel economy. #8 Sea Apache During the 1980s naval versions of the AH-64A for the United States Marine Corps and Navy were examined. Multiple concepts were studied with altered landing gear arrangements, improved avionics and weapons. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) was very interested and conducted a two-week evaluation of the Apache in September 1981, including shipboard operation tests. Subscribe Now : 🤍

The U.S. Army will spend billions of dollars over the next decade to upgrade its iconic Apache helicopters to the latest—and most likely, last—variant, the AH-64E “Guardian.” Already battle-tested in Afghanistan, the Apache Guardian reflects the latest trends in U.S. military doctrine—namely improved response and loiter time, interoperability with drones, and the capability to engage maritime targets. The Apache helicopter is a revolutionary development in the history of war. It is essentially a flying tank - - a helicopter designed to survive heavy attack and inflict massive damage. It can zero in on specific targets, day or night, even in terrible weather. As you might expect, it is a terrifying machine to ground forces. In this video, we'll look at the Apache's amazing flight systems, weapons systems, sensor systems and armor systems. Individually, these components are remarkable pieces of technology. Combined together, they make up an unbelievable fighting machine the most lethal helicopter ever created. At its core, an Apache works pretty much the same way as any other helicopter. It has two rotors that spin several blades. A blade is a tilted airfoil, just like an airplane wing. As it speeds through the air, each blade generates lift. The main rotor, attached to the top of the helicopter, spins four 20-foot (6-meter) blades. The pilot maneuvers the helicopter by adjusting a swash plate mechanism. The swash plate changes each blade's pitch (tilt) to increase lift. Adjusting the pitch equally for all blades lifts the helicopter straight up and down. Changing the pitch as the blades make their way around the rotation cycle creates uneven lift, causing the helicopter to tilt and fly in a particular direction. APACHE ROTORS AND BLADES As the main rotor spins, it exerts a rotation force on the entire helicopter. The rear rotor blades work against this force they push the tail boom in the opposite direction. By changing the pitch of the rear blades, the pilot can rotate the helicopter in either direction or keep it from turning at all. An Apache has double tail rotors, each with two blades. The newest Apache sports twin General Electric T700-GE-701C turboshaft engines, boasting about 1,700 horsepower each. Each engine turns a drive shaft, which is connected to a simple gear box. The gear box shifts the angle of rotation about 90 degrees and passes the power on to the transmission. The transmission transmits the power to the main rotor assembly and a long shaft leading to the tail rotor. The rotor is optimized to provide much greater agility than you find in a typical helicopter. ¬The core structure of each blade consists of five stainless steel arms, called spars, which are surrounded by a fiberglass skeleton. The trailing edge of each blade is covered with a sturdy graphite composite material, while the leading edge is made of titanium. The titanium is strong enough to withstand brushes with trees and other minor obstacles, which is helpful in "nap-of-the-earth" flying (zipping along just above the contours of the ground). Apaches need to fly this way to sneak up on targets and to avoid attack. The rear tail wing helps stabilize the helicopter during nap-of-the-earth flight as well as during hovering. You could say, based on all this information, that the Apache is just a high-end helicopter. As we'll see in the next few sections, the Apache's advanced weaponry puts it in an entirely different class. Music from 🤍 "Beauty Flow" by Kevin MacLeod (🤍) License: CC BY (🤍

Footage of the AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopter in action during training exercises including weapons load and AH-64 gunnery. The Boeing AH-64 Apache is an American twin-turboshaft attack helicopter with a tailwheel-type landing gear arrangement and a tandem cockpit for a crew of two. It features a nose-mounted sensor suite for target acquisition and night vision systems. It is armed with a 30 mm (1.18 in) M230 chain gun carried between the main landing gear, under the aircraft's forward fuselage, and four hardpoints mounted on stub-wing pylons for carrying armament and stores, typically a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and Hydra 70 rocket pods. The AH-64 has significant systems redundancy to improve combat survivability. The Apache began as the Model 77 developed by Hughes Helicopters for the United States Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter program to replace the AH-1 Cobra. The prototype YAH-64 was first flown on 30 September 1975. The U.S. Army selected the YAH-64 over the Bell YAH-63 in 1976, and later approved full production in 1982. After purchasing Hughes Helicopters in 1984, McDonnell Douglas continued AH-64 production and development. The helicopter was introduced to U.S. Army service in April 1986. The advanced AH-64D Apache Longbow was delivered to the Army in March 1997. Production has been continued by Boeing Defense, Space & Security, with over 2,400 AH-64s being produced by 2020. The U.S. Army is the primary operator of the AH-64. It has also become the primary attack helicopter of multiple nations, including Greece, Japan, Israel, the Netherlands, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. It has been built under license in the United Kingdom as the AgustaWestland Apache. Formerly known as AH-64D Block III, in 2012, it was redesignated as AH-64E Guardian to represent its increased capabilities. The AH-64E features improved digital connectivity, the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System, more powerful T700-GE-701D engines with upgraded face gear transmission to accommodate more power, capability to control unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), full IFR capability, and improved landing gear. New composite rotor blades, which successfully completed testing in 2004, increase cruise speed, climb rate, and payload capacity. Deliveries began in November 2011. Full-rate production was approved on 24 October 2012,[318] with 634 AH-64Ds to be upgraded to AH-64E standard and production of 56 new-build AH-64Es to start in 2019/20. Changes in production lots 4 through 6 shall include a cognitive decision aiding system and new self-diagnostic abilities. The updated Longbow radar has an oversea capacity, potentially enabling naval strikes; an AESA radar is under consideration. The E model is to be fit for maritime operations. The Army has expressed a desire to add extended-range fuel tanks to the AH-64E to further increase range and endurance. AH-64Es are to have the L-3 Communications MUM-TX datalink installed in place of two previous counterparts, communicating on C, D, L, and Ku frequency bands to transmit and receive data and video with all Army UAVs.Lots 5 and 6 will be equipped with Link 16 data-links.As of April 2020, 500 AH-64E have been delivered. ► Subscribe to Facts Box: 🤍 AH-64 Apache vs KA-52 Alligator - Which is better? The American AH-64 Apache and the KA-52 Alligator are two of the world’s most advance and deadliest war machines. We’ll hypothetically compare these helicopters in this video, and try to determine which would win in a real battlefield scenario. 1. Let’s have a quick look at the specifications first. The AH-64 Apache is a twin-engine attack helicopter developed for US Army in 1984. The US Army has more than 2000 Apaches in service. As of today, per unit cost of the latest variant is around $39M. Operated by crew of 2 the gunship’s empty weight is 11,387 lb, and maximum take-off weight is 23,000 Ib. The helicopter comes with 4 hardpoints on stub wings, a station on each wingtip for twin missile pack in addition to a 30 mm chain gun with 1,200 rounds. On the other hand, the first KA-52 Alligator was rolled out in 1997. The Army has more than 100 KA-52 helicopters in its service. As of today, per unit cost of the latest variant is around $18M. Operated by crew of 2 the gunship’s empty weight is 16,976 lb, and maximum take-off weight is 23,810 Ib. The alligator is fitted with 4 under-wing hardpoints and 2 wingtips hardpoints for countermeasures or air-to-air missiles. The gunship is armed with a semi-rigid 30 mm cannon having 460 rounds of ammunition. 2. Performance The Apache is equipped with two turbo shaft engines generating 3,780hp combined... Similarly the Alligator is powered by 2 turbo shaft engines driving two contra rotating main rotors. Each engine produces maximum power of 2,400hp... The Apache accelerates faster than the Alligator and has greater ferry range, but the gunship has higher top speed. However overall in terms of engine power and agility, both attack helicopters have their own strengths and weaknesses. 3. Survivability The apache has crew compartment shield between the cockpits in such a way, that at least one crew member can survive the hits. The compartment and the rotor blades are designed to sustain direct hits from 23 mm rounds… Whereas, a high degree of Ka-52 survivability is ensured by the pilot’s cockpit, fitted with steel plates that can withstand direct hits from 20 mm projectiles. Protection of fuel tanks, controls, drive system, auxiliary power unit are also heavily armored. Hydraulic and the rotor blades are made from composite material… Overall the alligator is slightly superior in terms of crew survivability due to its protected Armor, pilot ejection system and overall ruggedness. 4. Radar & Avionics The Apache is equipped with millimeter-wave Longbow radar, which can perform under poor-visibility. Lockheed Martin has developed a new targeting and night vision system for the Apache... In contrast, the alligator is equipped with nose-mounted Radar with two antennas for aerial and ground targets... In this category the American Apache is better than the attack helicopters due to its superior sensors and avionics. 5. Firepower The apache is equipped with 30mm automatic chain gun with 625 rounds a minute. The helicopter has capacity for up to 1,200 rounds of ammunition. Apache is armed with the Hellfire air-to-surface missile with fire and forget mode. The Range of the missile is around 5 to 8 miles… On the other hand, the alligator is equipped with 30 mm semi-rigid movable gun installed under the fuselage. The 6 externally wing-mounted hardpoints can carry wide array of weaponry. These Hardpoints can be armed with laser guided missiles… In this category, both gunships are at par as both have wide array of advanced weaponry at their disposal. So what are your thoughts regarding which attack helicopter is better and why, please let us know in the comments section. Also be sure to check out our other military videos. #shorts “LOOKS CAN KILL” AH-64 Apache Amazing helmet Sighting System 🇺🇸 💪 All the way back in 1985, the Apache attack helicopter had the ability to link “slave” the pilots’ helmet to the M230 Chain Gun. As the video shows, the gun tracks with the gunner’s head movement. When it came out, Apaches could hunt the enemy both Day and Night by using the helmet’s Sighting System. Through the eye display, thermal cams (Infrared Radiation) used moon/star light to see, target and then fire the gun’s devastating 30-mm rounds at a rate of 10-PEW PEWs per second. #YouTubeShorts ❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️ ↪ My mail / cooperation: militarygirlyt🤍proton.me ➤ More news, photos and videos on my TG: 🤍 ❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️ ✌️❤️️ Military Girl - A blog about what is happening in the military sphere around the world! Formerly known as AH-64D Block III, in 2012, it was redesignated as AH-64E Guardian.[319][320] It has improved digital connectivity, the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System, more powerful T700-GE-701D engines with upgraded face gear transmission to handle more power,[321] capability to control unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), full IFR capability, and improved landing gear.[322][323] New composite rotor blades, which completed testing in 2004, increase cruise speed, climb rate, and payload capacity.[324] Deliveries began in November 2011.[325] Full-rate production was approved on 24 October 2012,[326] 634 AH-64Ds will be upgraded into AH-64Es.[327] Changes in production lots 4 through 6 include a cognitive decision aiding system and new self-diagnostic abilities. The updated Longbow radar has an oversea capacity, potentially enabling naval strikes; an AESA radar is under consideration.[328] It will have a L-3 Communications MUMT-X datalink in place of two older counterparts, communicating on C, D, L, and Ku frequency bands to transmit and receive data and video with all Army UAVs.[329] Lots 5 and 6 will have Link 16 data-links.[330] The AH-64E is to be fit for maritime use.[331] The Army expressed interest in extended-range fuel tanks for greater endurance.[136] As of April 2020, 500 AH-64Es have been delivered.[3] General characteristics Crew: 2 (pilot, and co-pilot/gunner) Length: 58 ft 2 in (17.73 m) Fuselage length: 49 ft 5 in (15.06 m) Height: 12 ft 8 in (3.87 m) Empty weight: 11,387 lb (5,165 kg) Gross weight: 17,650 lb (8,006 kg) Max takeoff weight: 23,000 lb (10,433 kg) Powerplant: 2 × General Electric T700-GE-701 turboshaft engines, 1,690 shp (1,260 kW) each (upgraded to 1,890 shp (1,409 kW) T700-GE-701C for AH-64A/D from 1990) Main rotor diameter: 48 ft 0 in (14.63 m) Main rotor area: 1,908.5 sq ft (177.31 m2) 4-bladed main-rotor and 4-bladed tail-rotor in non-orthogonal alignment Blade section: root: HH-02; tip: NACA 64A006[352] Performance Maximum speed: 158 kn (182 mph, 293 km/h) Cruise speed: 143 kn (165 mph, 265 km/h) Never exceed speed: 197 kn (227 mph, 365 km/h) Range: 257 nmi (296 mi, 476 km) with Longbow radar mast Combat range: 260 nmi (300 mi, 480 km) Ferry range: 1,024 nmi (1,178 mi, 1,896 km) Service ceiling: 20,000 ft (6,100 m) Disk loading: 9.8 lb/sq ft (48 kg/m2) Power/mass: 0.18 hp/lb (0.30 kW/kg) Armament Guns: 1× 30 mm (1.18 in) M230 Chain Gun with 1,200 rounds as part of the Area Weapon Subsystem Hardpoints: Four pylon stations on the stub wings.
